BASS

Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides)

REDFISH (Red Drum)

One of the Drum family, sciaenops ocellatus, that is plentiful in Louisiana's coastal waters. The redfish has a copper/bronze body with a horizontal, downward opening mouth, large scales, and one to many spots at the base of the tail. Redfish juveniles are an inshore fish, generally until they reach about 4 years (roughly 30") before moving offshore to join the spawning population. Inshore they feed on crustaceans, fish, and mullosks and have a natural lifespan of about twenty years. This is a great fish to catch on light tackle, with a lot of fight. Most often caught in the shallows along grass shorelines.

SPECKLED TROUT

Cynoscion nebulosus is one of the tastiest and most popular coastal fish in Southeastern Louisiana. A silver fish with a spotted back, the Speckled Trout has a soft mouth that can leave a bewildered fisher staring at a lonely hook if he takes too long to land the fish! Speckled Trout are frequently found in schools, and can be caught on a number of rigs, including soft plastic beetles, live or dead shrimp, or cocaho. Upon finding a large school of trout, it's not uncommon to be able to reel in two at a time on a double shad-rig baited with shrimp. Most productive during the late spring and summer months.

FLOUNDER

The Flounder (paralichthys dentatus) has an oblong body with a large mouth. Lower jaw projects further than upper jaw. Generally brown in color to better enable it to blend into the bottom, it is usually found on mud or sand beds. Inland fishing is best during the summer months. Flounders feed on crustaceans, small fish, worms, and squid and are usually caught on the bottom.
