During the Civil War the communist were called REDS because the color red had long been associated with revolutionary socialists. Although they were almost defeated in 1919, Trotsky organized an efficient Red Army that turned the tide of the civil war. Lenin took control over most industries, railroads, and banks. He ordered peasants to turn over surplus grain to the government, but often it simply seized the grain needed to supply the Red Army.
