Welcome to the Primary Sedimentation Basin...
Another View of Primary Sed Basin
Sedimentation has been used as a tool in chemistry for quite a long time. Its purpose is to provide sufficient time to allow gravity to act on matter more dense than the liquid the matter is suspended in. Gravity will force the more dense matter to settle at the bottom of the container. Things like sand, silt, dirt, fish, & other materials which pass through holes in the pump screens settle out here in the pri. sed basins.
Here at my plant, we have 2 Primary Sedimentation Basins. Each hold about 40 Million Gallons (see pictures above). River water enters at the rear of the West Basin and travels to the front. It is then channeled into the rear of the East basin. The water then flows to the front of the East Basin to the Gate House, where it travels underneath the street to my plant's Chemical Building. During its travel under the driveway, the water is "pre-chlorinated". This is to kill any bacteria that may have grown in the primary sed basins....
