Development
Madison Chemical Industries Inc.
(one of the 100 leading coatings manufacturers in North America)
2. Education in Corrosion, Chemical
Engineering, and Materials Engineering:
B.Eng. Degree in
Corrosion and Chemical Engineering (Received at the age of 18)
Nanchang Aeronautical Engineering University, P.R. China
M.Eng.
Degree in Corrosion and Materials Engineering, 1986
Institute of Metal Research / Institute of Corrosion and Protection
of Metals
Academia Sinica
A
joint Ph.D. student in Corrosion and Physical Engineering
Tsing-hua University and Academia Sinica (1986-88)
Ph.D.
in Corrosion and Materials Science & Engineering, 1993
McMaster University, Canada.
Centennial Scholar at McMaster University (1988)
The last pupil of Dr.Walter
Smeltzer, one of the world leaders in high temperature corrosion research.
3. Experience in Coatings Industry:
Developed more than 20
high performance, 100% or near 100% solids, high build, fast setting, all temperature
cure, polyurethane and epoxy type protective coatings. These coatings are recognized in
the industry as the Industrial Coatings of the 21st Century, because of not only their
outstanding performance but also their zero or very low VOC's to meet the challenges of
environmental protection.
Specializing
in the corrosion protection for industries such as underground fuel storage tanks,
pipelines (steel, ductile iron, and concrete), power poles, water and wastewater, oil and
gas, transportation, and marine applications in North America, with some in the Middle
East, Europe and Asia.
Management
Representative and Lead Auditor of ISO 9000.
Involvement
in education, consulting, and marketing of various coating technologies and products.
Examples of these activities include:
Involvement in the newly published ANSI/AWWA C222
Standard for Polyurethane Coating for the Interior and Exterior of Steel Water Pipelines
and Fittings;
Two feature articles in the July 1997 issue
of the Journal of Protective Coatings and Linings
and the June/July 1997 issue of Urethane
Technology on 100% solids, solventless, UV and color stable, aliphatic polyurethane
coatings technology, and various conference presentations on 100% solids coatings
technolgoies;
Developed the new coating technology for protecting underground storage
tanks for flammable liquids, resulting in the establishment of UL 1746 Part IV standards,
STI ACT100-U standards, and related ULC standards in North America.
4. Experience in Corrosion Study:
The
1st researcher in the field who has proposed a kinetic theory of internal oxidation for
ternary alloys;
The 1st researcher who
has theoretically described the oxygen solubility behavior as a function of alloying
concentrations in a ternary alloy system;
The 1st researcher who
has established a criterion for the formation of external protective oxide scales on
ternary alloys.
Work shown in Acta Metall. as well as Oxidation of
Metals.
Recent work has
included field and laboratory analyses for one of the U.S. largest steel pipe
manufacturers, as well as the external corrosion of ductile iron pipes.
5. A variety of work experiences in both
North America and China:
Assistant to Dr.
Changxu Shi, former Vice President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and Vice Chairman of the Chinese
Academy of Engineering (1986-88).
Involved in the
establishment of the Chinese science funding system, the research on middle-term and
long-term development strategy of science and technology in China, and the establishment
of the Chinese Atmospheric Corrosion Network (1986-88)
Acted as the Executive
Chairman and organized the 1st Chinese Youth Materials Scientists' Conference in 1988.
Executive Member of
the Toronto
Society for Coatings Technology (1998-present).
Currently a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, NACE International, ASTM, the Federation
of Societies for Coatings Technology, SSPC, Electrochemistry Society, and the Chinese Professional Association of
Canada.
Member, Editorial
Advisory Board of the international journal of "Anti-Corrosion Methods and
Materials"
Industrial Advisor,
Corrosion Laboratory, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
