Charles Barnett, Aintree's Managing Director, said: "Merseyside Police have been nothing short of staggering. Once of these days the story will be told of the efforts put in by all their operatives - the work that has gone in to get this course ready over the last two days has been quite staggering. "It has been a wonderful day's racing and it is a great thrill to us to have a crowd in excess of 20,000, a remarkable figure. "12.45pm today was the first time I got into my office since 3pm Saturday.
There has been a lot of help from the local authourities and social services, but
most of all from our own staff and those we co-opted into help." "I always said Tony Dobbin is a very good horseman
and of course I was delighted when I saw him make it all because I knew he'd stay
all day- the breeder said he'd stay six miles if need be, so I just cheered and
cheered and made a fool of myself perhaps but who cares!
I buy most of my horses from New Zealand because I do like buying my own horses and its part of the risk I take. I don't gamble with the bookies, but I like gambling. At Aintree it's just magic in racing - to
compete and come with a young horse is a magic day for me - it's great news - to
come here with a horse that I first saw on video when he was in New Zealand is so
exciting and wonderful - it's a great day for me and everybody.
I buy a lot of horses from New Zealand on
a fairly regular basis - I take a risk and pay for them.
Steve Brookshaw is a young trainer - he's
trained hunters and point-to-pointers for us for 12 years and in eight years of that
time he's trained 43 winners - he trained 6 last year and this year is his 13!!
He said that this horse is like a real Kiwi - he can play rugby if you ask him to! He's a big athletic horse and can dance about a bit - the loose horse nearly pushed him out at the end. Steve (Brookshaw) is a wonderful young man
- he trained us Rolling Ball to win the Foxhunters winner last year.'
He was jumping from fence to fence - we had a little
scare - I thought it might not have been the same atmosphere but for me it's better!
The crowd has been fantastic - he was fabulous over those fences - across the Melling
road he was ailing on me a bit and pricking his ears, he's that sort of horse you
know - he's a big idle horse.'
"I've ridden this horse three times this year and won on him once - I fell in my first National and have missed the last three through injury - I've had a few winners over the Aintree fences before - I won the Bechers - I just can't believe it." Asked is winning better than sex?? Dobbin replied: I've got my girlfriend down, some I'm not going to go through what Mick Fitzgerald did!!' We know he stays and there were no orders
for the jockey - he got beat last time carrying topweight and he's carrying 20-something
pounds less than before so we thought we better go for it - so long as he jumped,
we thought we'd have a very good chance.'"This is my second season as a trainer
and I couldn't ask for anything better.Uncle Tim just missed the ride on a
winner-his leather broke at Bechers and he rode bareback from Bechers to the finish
so he was unlucky.I always thought he would run very well because we know
he stays the trip and he was carrying a lot less weight than in the Midlands National
and the other trial he ran in - so we though he'd got a really good chance and we
fancied him in that respect. He's run his race - he's always had then just
behind him and he's just murdered them really. I take my hat off to all the management
to be able to put it on because it was very disappointing not to do it on Saturday
when all the atmosphere was really buzzing, but there is still quite an atmosphere
here now and I want to congratulate the management and everybody who has worked
hard to get it going."
