Notes:The Spitfire MkV was the original model delivered to Australia in 1942. 234 aircraft of this type were delivered. The Mk VIII was delivered in 1943. 410 aircraft of this type were eventually delivered.
Types:The production model initially delivered to Australia was the Mk VC. This model had the Vokes Radiator fitted which was required for efficient tropical service. The Mk Vc had the rounded rudder like the earlier Mk I and II series.
After deliveries had started the codename "Capstan" was applied. This was a popular brand of Cigarette, and the name was intended to confuse the Japanese by disguising their real identity.
(Yeah right!!!! Who were they kidding).
The Mark VIII was a more capable and definately faster version of the spitfire. This model had the pointed rudder and no tropical "vokes" radiator.

Cameras:Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawk IA
Type:Low straight wing, Single seat fighter aircraft
Notes:Undeniably the Kittyhawk was the most potent fighter Australia possesed during the war. It was unaffectionally known as the "neverhawk" from early 1942 until deliveries started. The Kittyhawk was flown in the Pacific against Japanese and in Africa against the Germans.
Types:The model initially delivered was the P-40E. 163 aircraft of this variant were delivered. Also the P-40K (kittyhawk III) of which 42 models were delivered. 90 P-40M models and 553 P-40N ("Kittyhawk VI" -Long Fuselage model).
848 aircraft of different marks were eventually delivered from March 1942-February 1945. Unfortunately many of the late deliveries were scrapped or destroyed by the RAAF without the aircraft ever seeing flight.
