Who the hell was Henry.?
Henry ,vk3en, was one of the main voices heard on 160 meters form the early seventies through till the late eighties, his voice, old world style of speech and clipped audio made his station stand out. He came on the air in a big way after retiring from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade after 50 years of service. In that time he was responsible for setting up and running the Brigades radio system.
You could sometimes hear Henry on vkn8 when he was filling in for the announcers, until about 1972 vkn8 could be heard up on the top end of the broadcast band where they ran the carrier 24 hours day with a power of 1000 watts and transmitted from poles near the Eastern Hill Fire Station..Every 30 seconds there was a beep (most annoying) the return link from the trucks was on 80 Mhz AM..
You could hear Henry in his official voice dispatching the appliances and often he would come on and say APPARENTLY A HOAX CALL.
You can hear what Henry sounded like in .ra audio clips from our audio archive page.
These rare images of Henry are from his last years, as they are stills from 8mm movie film the quality is quite house.to say the least.
