Let's follow a peanut through an elephant and see!
Mouth: Teeth are used to chew the peanut. The massive tongue pushes it to the back of the mouth.
Esophagus: This is extremely long in elephants. It is a passage from the mouth to the stomach. The peanut is pushed along by peristalsis.
Stomach: While the peanut is partially digested here, it is just fermented. An elephant has a huge stomach with a capacity of 500 pounds. The peanut is stored in the stomach until it is fermented enough.
Small intestine: What's left of the peanut goes here to be digested. The small intestine of an elephant is anything but small! The last part of the intestine is where the nutrients are absorbed.
Large intestine: The remains of the peanut leave the elephant's body as waste.
