UPHEAVAL DOME | ||||||||||||
is located 35 miles west of Moab Utah in Canyonlands National Park where it was originally known as "Island In the Sky." This name has now been applied to the whole northern part of the park, but the ground compacted below the impact has proven to be more resistant to erosion than the surrounding area, making Upheaval Crater the real island. Click on the image to see a larger photo. My photos were ruined, so it will be several months [spring 1999] before I can update them. First described by geologist T.S. Harrison in 1927, it was not called a salt dome until E.T. Mc Knight applied that label in 1940, but he also stated that Upheaval Dome was the: "most peculiar structural feature that has yet been found in southeastern Utah." You may see my reasons for concluding this must be an impact crater by clicking on the button at the bottom of each page, or selecting a feature from the left side list.
