ERNEST LEOPOLD WOODNUTT Born - 9th January 1895 at 13 First Avenue, S.C.R., Inchicore, Dublin. Father - Albert Rufus Woodnutt. Married - Sarah Clarkin on 10th August 1921 at the Church of Our Lady of Refuge, Rathmines, Dublin. Worked first as a Hardware Assistant (Caple St., Dublin) and later as an Insurance clerk. Lived at 75 Lower Leeson St., Dublin at time of marriage Ernest was a member of the old I.R.A. during the Troubles (1916-22). He used to keep his papers rolled up in the brass bars of his bedstead in Clontarf. His gun was hidden in the garden (either in the flour beds or in a chicken house). The house was raided at one stage but his next door neighbour, who was in the D.M.P (Dublin Metropolitan Police) had tipped him off and Ethel was sent to their Aunts with his gun and ammunition at the bottom of a basked of eggs. Died - 10th February 1952 (aged 57) at Dr. Stevens Hospital, Dublin, from shock and hemorrhage following injury to his legs and ribs. The Injuries were received when he was knocked down by an army motor car (2D3487), driven at the time by Corporal Joseph Mc Caffery, at South Circular Rd., Islandbridge, Dublin. Sarah Clarkin |
