Navigating the Lower Saint Lawrence in the 19th Century.

Quebec Gazette #6593 09/12/1846 Page 2, Col. 2C.

Letters received from Matane this morning, state that the vessels before reported ashore below Ste. Anne, are the Kingston, Lloyds, Washington, Thames and Llewellan. The two latter, we believe loaded below. No particulars are given. The crew of the Marquis of Wellesley, ashore at St. Simon, have come up, also two men of the Ruby, wrecked at Cocks Cove. Bark Cleopatra, ship Marion and brig Lion, have all put back from damage received in the gales below. The wrecks repairing in the docks, &c., are Hebe, Robert Stride, Cove, China and European.

Shortly after the close of the navigation of 1845, we published a recapitulation of the vessels wrecked on their voyages to and from the port of Quebec during the navigation season, the number of which amounted to 47. We have made a recapitulation of those wrecked during the season just closed, and it will be seen that the number far exceeds that of last year. The number which have been cast ashore in the River St. Lawrence is not over that of last year, but the great number lost in the gale of the 19th September has been the means of so considerably increasing our list of this season.

Of the vessels wrecked in the river, we Of the vessels wrecked in the river, we have only given the names of those that were condemned and sold. Several others were cast ashore, but were got off with trifling damage.
Of the vessels wrecked in the river, we An unusual number of vessels bound to this port, have put into the lower ports this fall, having received considerable damage in the gale of the 19th September, and we are sorry to perceive that a number of homeward bound vessels which sailed hence in the month of August, are not yet accounted for, having probably encountered the same gale, and been totally lost.
