THE CARLING PAGE

For People with the Family name: CARLING

More information will be added soon regarding the history of those people with the surname: CARLING

I don't know how reliable the following information is, but it appears that it may have some basis in fact:
The English family name, Carling, is classified as being of personal name origin. As in the case of many family names, this surname derives its origins from the given name of one of the parents of its initial bearer. Where a name is derived from the father's first name, is referred to as being patronymic in origin, and when it is taken from the personal name of the mother it is matronymic in origin. With regard to Carling, this name is derived from the Middle English name (Carl) and the diminutive suffix - ing." Thus the original bearer of this name was known by members of his community as (Son of , or descendant of Little Carl).

This personal name is derived from the Old English (Ceorl), meaning "Husbandman " or "peasant" and later "Churl." Variants of the surname CARLING include KARL, CARL, CARLE and CARLESON.

One of the earliest references to this name or to a variant is a record of one WILLIAM CARL, registered in the subsidy rolls of Sussex in 1296.

Richard Carling and Annis Chamberlin were married in Thatcham, Berkshire, England on October 11, 1613.

Dorothy Carling, a relation of John Carling, was registered in St. Benet's Church, London, 15 April, 1647.

Christopher Carling of Stokesley, Yorkshire is mentioned in a marriage record from 15 December, 1726.

Samuel Carling and Lucy Edwards were married in Dorney, Buckingham, England 23 May, 1743.

Adam Carling, son of Adam and Sarah Carling was christened in Flowergate Presbyterian Church, Whitby, Yorkshire, 24 Nov, 1766.

David, son of David and Ann Carling was christened in St. Mary's Church, Putney, London 1 Feb 1818.

Robert Carling and Mary Elizabeth Cookson were married in Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire, 28 May, 1859.

However, this name may have been documented even earlier than the names indicated above.

I have taken an interest in our family name, and I will be trying to put together some more information here. If ANYONE reading this knows something about ANY branch of the Carling family, please e-mail it to me and I will post it on here. It would also be fascinating to know about any of the following topics:

My side of the family seem sto have a LOT of men named John Carling or some derivative. In fact, ALL of the men descendants of my grandfather have John in their names.

I am trying to find ancestors, so far with a little success. I found one possible candidate, since we were Londoners and there seem to have not been many Carlings in the London area. Here is my candidate so far:

John CARLING
Christened: 18 Dec 1851
Saint Pancras, Old Church, London, England
Father: Charles CARLING
Mother: Harriet

These are some other common spellings I have seen, similar to Carling:
Carlin, Carliner, Carlingford, Carlinge, Carlon, Carlan, Carlinsky, Karlin.

RECENT EXCITING NEWS! December 1999:

Hello. My name is James Peter Carling Jr. I am originally from New Jersey and now live in Central Florida. I have some information I thought all with the name Carling would appreciate. My Uncle, the late Phillip Carling did extensive research on the family origins. He traveled to Europe. Europeans keep very detailed records that date back longer than you and I can imagine. There is a town in Ireland named Carlingsford. There, townsfolk assisted him in gathering the history of Carling. I will attempt to get the documentation he aquired while he was there. In the meantime, I will tell you that the earliest Carling on record there was from the first century of this millenium(I should clarify as close as we are to 2000, I refer to the year 1000AD), or there about, and was a Viking (yes Norwegian) who sailed for none other than Eric the Red. During one of the Viking excursions into Ireland, a young viking named Carling stayed behind as the others departed. From this viking's family, was born the town of Carlingsford. Carlings soon found their way into other areas of Europe. England and Scottland were first, then France. There is even a town in Northern France settled by an early Carling, and the town is also named Carling. I've been there personally, as I lived in SW Germany for 4 years. I've bookmarked your page and will stay in touch. Hope you enjoy this little bit of info.

Best Regards,
Jamie Carling

NEW! I will soon post my own genealogy here, going back to the 1700s in England! Thanks to my dad's cousin Liz who was so kind and sent me genealogical charts going back several generations. Liz and John Carling live in County Durham, England.

ALSO: November, 1999 from Duncan Carling in California:

Hi Brian,

I have seen your site and think it's great! Thanks for the link back to my page.

My family is based primarily in new york and pennsylvania, I moved out here 6 years ago and am one of the only transplants. Before moving to america, the carling side lived in England. However we have had a very hard time tracing that much further. My father did try extensively, but hit some confusing dead ends.

If you have information about your Carling relatives in England, you might try contacting my father, Francis Carling, his email is Fcarling@aol.com

regards,

Duncan Carling
San Francisco, CA

Also from November, 1999:

It's fun to see your own name in "lights". I didn't realize there are so many places and people with the Carling name. I am a descendent of John Carling of New York and Utah. I am one of the people who have been searching for years for the ancestors of John Carling of New York. I hope someday we will find that elusive missing link to find his father Gabriel Carling's ancestors, where he came from and how he got to New York.

A note about some CARLING streets in London:

Carlingford Road, Hampstead NW3 [1997]
Carlingford Road, South Tottenham N15 [1997]

Did you know that I, Brian Carling, was born in West Hampstead? Well, they didn't name the street for me, but I DO understand that I may be be related to some Carlingfords. It seems that CARLINGFORD is a fairly rare derivation of the Carling name!
