General information on LIFESTAR
The LIFE STAR critical care air medical program transport service started in 1985.
LIFE STAR is available to all emergency/critical care patients within a 150 mile radius surrounding Hartford, Connecticut.
The LIFE STAR helicopters are American Eurocopter BK-117 Twin turbine engine helicopters, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The aircraft are based on the rooftop helipad on Hartford Hospital.
Each LIFE STAR helicopter is identical in the composition of its crew and capabilities, and can transport 2 patients.
LIFE STAR can travel 155 mile per hour, and is usually airborne within 5 minutes of a request for service.
LIFE STAR 2 was added to the program in July 1990.
The LIFE STAR helicopters only need a 60' x 60' landing zone.
Here is the original LIFE STAR crew and helicopter back in August of 1985. Back then the aircraft was based on the ground across Seymour Street on what is now the Connecticut Children's Medical Center.
This is the roof top helipad on top of Hartford Hospital.
The largest in New England, it can hold a total of six helicopters. Two aircraft would be stored inside the hangar, and four others
could land in their designated areas.
Here is the inside of the hangar where LIFE STAR 1 is undergoing some routine maintenance work.
