Holiday USA 1997 - The Grand Canyon
Having enjoyed the first trip, and being cheated of a look at the Grand Canyon, we were on our way back, this time staying at one of the theme hotels, Camalot. The rooms were very reasonably priced and huge with two king size beds and a zillion TV channels. The evening meal was about $6.00 for as much as you could eat and breakfast $5.00. fantastic value and good quality. After another great night on the strip, which you've got to see to believe, its bed and an early start to the Canyon before the weather starts to boil up again. |
Were up, breakfasted, fueled and away on time, although I did turn back to the FBO after the engine run only just put the oil pressure in the green. Adding another half quart seemed to do the job, and we were off, I spent most of the next 10 minuets or so watching the oil pressure just in case but it continued to read green, the temps were good and on we went. As we left Las Vegas we were lucky enough to be vectored not to far from the Hoover Dam, which is the small white speck in the middle of the picture opposite, behind is the vast expanse of Lake Mead. |
With the GC map on WAN's lap we were on our way, and what a sight, this has to be one of the most fantastic sights from the air you could ever want to see, the size and depth of this incredible place is unbelievable. As we wallowed in the splendor, I also had eyes and ears peeled for the heli's and other traffic flying around here while looking out for the emergency landing site just in case. More importantly the bubbling clouds which have the ability of coming out of no where and turning into thunder storms. |
At the bottom of the immense gorge the Red River twists and turns its way towards Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam. We flew for about an hour before it was time to turn back and head for home. |
On que the sky starts to fill with fluffy clouds and rain can be seen in the distance, Its time to go as the CB's start to form over the Canyon. Heading west were on our way back to Gillipsie, what a day.. |
