So what do all those different colored jersey's mean?  Did the navy just run out of white?.  The fact is that each color denotes a specific function for the wearer.  From the "God seat", the Air Boss (and anyone else that cares to look) can tell who should and shouldn't be where on the flight deck.
 
 

So who does what?...

RED SHIRTS

REDSHIRTS or "Ordies" are in charge of all air launched ordinance from 20 mil cannon shells to 2000 lb laser guided bombs.

BLUE SHIRTS
Blue shirts are in charge of chocks and chains, securing the air wings aircraft, making sure that once parked, they stay where they are left.

PURPLE SHIRTS

Best known as "Grapes", the purple shirts are responsible for fueling and de-fueling the ship's aircraft.

YELLOW SHIRTS
Yellow shirts designate aircraft directors. Nothing with wings move on the flight deck without someone in yellow pointing the way.

WHITE SHIRTS
White shirts denote safety, and range from the LSOs (landing signals officers) to the plane-checkers that do final safety-checks before the aircraft are launched.

GREEN SHIRTS

Green shirts mean maintenace, weither it be aircraft mechanics or the ships catapults and arresting gear crews.

BROWN SHIRTS

The Unsung heroes of the flight deck, The Brown Shirts are plane captains  The only guys other than the pilots that get their name on the aircraft. Among their duties is minor maintenance of their aircraft and assisiting pilots with startup and shutdowns of the birds.

SILVER SUITS

The Guys in silver are crash-crew firemen.  If a plane ever catches fire, these guys ensure the aircrew get out.
