Beleive it or not, the HST is an old idea. It was theorized before we had men in space! The problem was actually doing it. As most of you may know, this was not an easy task and the first results were depressing. Well, it's fixed and the information coming back is INCREDIBLE! The goal, for those who are not familiar with it, was to measure the size of the Universe and it's expansion rate, better known as the "Hubble Constant" (thus the name of the telescope), as well as provide clearer pictures of the Universe around us. What we got was more than we asked for!
Some of you may have heard that hubble is down right now. Yes, hubble is in fact in "stand-by" mode until it can be serviced. It has done a good job, with very few servicings and this servicing was overdue in the first-place. So we shall wait and hope that it will continue doing it's GREAT job! Until we finally get an interferometer in space!
Some of Hubbles discoveries:
Birth of Stars | Planetary Disks | Black Holes |
Colliding Galaxies | A larger Universe than we imagined | Aurora's of our Neighboring Planets |
Brown Dwarf's | Practical use for Gravitational Lens | Quasars |
First decent views of the Asteroids | Storms on our Neighboring Planets | Background radiation of the Universe |
