Flamethrower

After learning that any attempt to kill the alien in a way that spilled blood would mean disaster for the Nostromo, the crew decided to try to force the alien into an airlock, using flamethrowers to frighten it.

Propane, C3H8, is a typical flamethrower fuel.

  • Balance the equation for the combustion of propane.
  • Calculate the molar enthalpy for the reaction.

The combustion of a hydrocarbon yields water and carbon dioxide:

    SubstanceDelta Hfo (KJ mol-1) at 25 C
    C3H8(n-propane)-103.8
    O2(g)0
    CO2(g)-393.5
    H2O(g)-241.8

The enthalpy change for a reaction is the standard enthalpies of formation for the products, minus the standard enthalpies of formation for the reactants.

    [(3)(-393.5) + (4)(-241.8)] - [(1)(-103.8) + (5)(0)]

    [(-1180.5) + (-967.2)] - [(-103.8) + 0]

    -2043.9 KJ mol-1
