Lilliput Locomotives

Lilliput runs 1:64 scale models of real New Zealand locomotives. All locos are hand built from kitsets or from scratch. Most diesel locos cost around $350 - $400 to build and steam locos are more expensive. Lilliput uses old style Hornby Duplo couplings but is slowly moving to Kadee's as standard. All new locos are being equiped with these as are old locos when they come in for major repair work.

Lilliput locos take a real beating, with two locos running from 10:00am to 4:30pm daily and sometimes longer. We do not have the staff to swap locos constantly so locos are usually left running for up to a week ( sometimes longer ) or until they fail. Because of this steam locos are not allowed to be left running unattended or for more than 20 minutes. They have a nasty tendancy to shed valve gear around the layout. Repairs have to be done quickly because of limited time, but still have to be capable of lasting for many hours of use. You soon find out after a few hours running time how well you have repaired the fault. The perfered motor is the Sagami 2032CW model because of it's long life and ease of repair, but some steam locos use an Arfix 2 pole open motor.
