On August 9, 1945 a B-29 superfortress called 'Enola Gay', flown by
USAAF Colonel Paul Tibbets lifted off from an airfield in Okinawa. Its mission was
to fly to Hiroshima and deploy 'Little boy', the first fission warhead ever used in real war.
This image was taken by the rear gunner of the Enola Gay, a few seconds after detonation.
