Here is the homework for Week 2. Having PSP5 on one computer (at home) and Netscape and Internet access on another 25 km away (at work) is proving a bit complicated. I suspect that I could have compressed the .jpg files a bit further and still been OK in Netscape but on my monitor at home these seemed to be the limit and the saving in size was not appreciable.
I found that .jpg standard compression usually gave smaller files than progressive compression which I can not see with PSP3 or Adobe Photoshop 3, the programmes which I have at work. I think all were reduced to 32K (15 bit) colours but it was getting late at night and I forgot to write it down for all of them.
The .gif files are all 87a non-interlaced which saved 25% - 40% in size but .jpg was still the winner in every case.
Despite "the common rule of thumb is to always use .gif for cartoons ..." bearxmas and santi are much smaller in .jpg and looked rotten using the safe palette. Maybe they don't rate as cartoons??
I've shown the smallest .gif and the smallest .jpg versions for comparison.
