I sometimes say that every day should be Thanksgiving. The great thing about Thanksgiving is that it gives you an excuse to think about what you are thankful for, which is really a way of thinking about the good things in your life. Doing this is healthy I think, because of course we tend to dwell on the negative. So I thought I'd brainstorm a list of things I am truly thankful for, just for June 25th.
Now I could make this list really long if I include everything I am thankful for, like having a good and steady paycheck, a roof over my head that now no longer leaks, and my health, but I think I'll just keep it to the things I had in mind that struck me to write this. Actually, I should make an effort to be more thankful for my health, because I sure miss it when I'm sick... These are in no particular order:
- The Blues. The Blues really help when anything else in your life ain't that great.
- The Dharma. The wisdom of the Buddha. Helping me finally understand so much.
- That my baby girl is healthy, so cute, and soooo incredibly smart!! She's not even 2 and she can count to 10 (in 2 languages) and already has big pieces of the alphabet down!
- The unbounded creativity of entertaining dreams.
- That the U.S. is not a war zone. Never have to dodge bullets. Most of us don't anyway...
- The restorative effects of meditation. Sometimes it's better than sleep.
- Good friends, real and virtual. What is the difference really?
- Strong Bad e-mail and Wigu. They're both really funny.
- The quality of Japanese cars. Owning one is almost completely care-free.
- The internet. I'd be completely bored with computers by now if it weren't for the internet.
- That I've traveled some and seen as much of the world as I have. So far.
- Mark Twain.
- The Caribbean and tropical islands in general.
- The ocean.
- Beautiful days. I must try to appreciate them more when they come, instead of being so preoccupied with other stuff.
- The way the Buddhist teaching of Emptiness can just take away all the pressure and stress.
- That it's not winter.
So those are some things I'm thankful for. Other times I so lose my faith in humanity that I think the Earth would simply be better off without us.
