The Institute was founded in 1964 as the Department of
Animal Physiology of the Institute of Experimental Biology and
it became an independent Institute of Slovak Academy of Sciences in 1969.
The scientific activity of the Institute of Animal Physiology
focuses on the complex research of animal physiology in the interdisciplinary domains of biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology, morphology and microbiology. Principal studies in animal
physiology are directed on the analysis and target modification
of physiological processes related to the utilization of
exogenous and endogenous nitrogen; function of kidneys in
regulating urea retention of ruminants; energy utilization; as
well as ways to modify rumen fermentation; genetic and
biochemical characteristics of rumen ecosytem; food intake and
growth regulations in animals. In the field of animal physiology
important information are obtained using sophisticated methods
of sheep kidney micropunctions, microcytodensitometry of brain
neurons, simulation of rumen fermentation in artificial rumen,
electronmicroscopical immunocytochemistry. The Institute also
deals with the questions of applied research, mainly in the field
of subcellular bacterial vaccines and biotechnology.
The Institute is actively involved in the international
research programmes (EU Copernicus).
