Galaxies |
A Galaxy is a system of stars containing hundreds of
billions of stars. Galaxies are of various shapes, some are spiral, for example, ours,
M51, M31, and M100, and they have spiral arms. Some elliptical, for example, M87 in the
Virgo cluster of galaxies. Some are irregular, for example, M82 in Ursa Major. The most
remote galaxies known are at least 18.000 million l.y. away; all apart from those of our
Local Group, are receding from us, so the entire universe is expanding. The man who
discovered that, was Edwin Powell Hubble.
