Recently reissued
by Estes. This one's 78 inches tall (Kim's only 62 inches
tall!) and will go 600 feet high on a D engine. |

Maniac |

A friend recommended this one (Kim liked
the name, and the fact that it only flies on D's!).
4/1/00 Update: Launched with a D12-7, it flew
straight and HIGH! wRASP predicts a maximum altitude of 812
feet, but it looked higher! Successful landing within 20 feet
of the launch pad.
We've
recognized that Maniac has the same body tube size as my
Astrocam. Our next flight may have the Astrocam nosecone
with film instead of the Maniac's nosecone.... Please check
back soon.

Long Shot (two stage version) |

Pictures of first flights |
Launched with D 12-0 booster and C 6-5 upper stage
- 1st launch was great, but it floated into a tree.
I climbed ~10 feet and recovered it
- 2nd launch we packed the streamer too tight, and had a
defective engine (see picture),
and it failed to completely deploy....==>"Lawn Dart"!
- Rebuilt and even longer (59 1/2"; taller than Kim!), we
launched again one evening. Perfect deployment, but
the body tube was seriously bent where the fins attach due
to a hard landing. :-(
In the shop for repairs.... Next time we'll reinforce
the base, add a D-capable engine mount, and include an 18" or
24" parachute! |

Long Shot (two stage version) |

10/4 Update-Rebuilt and ready to
fly (only 54" tall now). It's got a D-engine for the
upper stage to go with the D-booster, and an 18" parachute
(instead of the streamer). wRASP
simulation software predicts the Long Shot could
fly to ~1250 feet on two D-engines (compared with an estimated
maximum of 925 feet in the original configuration)
We've replaced the Estes Long Shot decals with:

A different tree ate it, but it came down a week later after
a heavy rain caused the shock cord to separate from the body tube!
It's "in the shop" now for repairs. |
