La Normandie fut occupée pr des peuples variés, rattachés à la Belgique ou à la gaule celtique. Le nom de famille Talbot provient de ce pays.

Les Romains occupèrent la région au 1er siècle avant J.-C. Quand les Romains quittèrent la région au IIIe siècle après J.-C., la Normandie fut gouvernée par plusieurs tribus dissidentes. Au VIe siècle, Wandrille, le premier compte de la Normandie, unifia la région. Le duché fut établi de façon permanente en l'an 911, lorsque Rollon, comte d'Orkney, envahit le territoire. Il assiégea Paris et prit le territoire de la Normandie du roi Charles le Simple de France. Rollon devint donc duc de Normandie en 911. Le patronyme Talbot fut retrouvé surtout en Normandie, où cette famille distinguée était anciennement siégée dans la seigneurie de Lesieux Le premier enregistré était Guillaume Talbot, descendant de Hugh, évèque de Lesieux et était surnommé Taleboth. il était le plus jeune fils de Gillaume, comte d'Exmes, et devenait le compte d'Eu. Hugh Taleboth en 1035 donnait une charte à la Trinité du Mont. il était un des barons qui joingnirent le duc Guilaume de Normandie dans l'invasion de l'Angleterre en 1066. Il épousa la fille de Gérard de Gournay, de la grande branche normande, fondant la maison historique de Talbot. Hugh Talbot était castillan de Pressis en Normandie en 1119, et les branches normandes florissaient et étaient les bienfaiteurs des Abbayes de la Trinité Sainte, Rouen, St.-Lo Rouen, Beaubec, Valmont, Bival, St.-Victor-enCaux, Le Tréport et Langueville.

A travers les âges, la plupart des patronymes subirent des changements d'orthographe pour différentes raisons. Un fils avait le choix de ne pas écrire son nom de la même manière que son père. Un grand nombre des changements d'orthographe était des erreurs simples faites par un scribe, un prêtre ou un recenseur lorsqu'une personne articulait son nom. Il y a donc plusieurs variations du nom de famille Talbot comme Talbott, Talbout, Taleboth, Tallbot, Talibot, pour en nommer quelques exemples.

Avec la conquête de l'Angleterre en 1066 par Guillaume le Conquérant, duc de Normandie, le duché devint une partie du domaine des rois d'Angleterre. La Normandie passa en même temps que l'Angleterre à la dynastie royale des Plantagenêt au XIIe siècle. A cette même époque, Aliénor d'Aquitaine épousa Henri II, roi d'Angleterre, auquel elle apporta en dot l'héritage des terres normandes. Elle fut la cause des conflits majeurs qui s'en suivirent et qui opposèrent la France à l'Angleterre. En 1259, Henri III dut renoncer officiellement ses droits sur le territoire en question.

Le patronyme Talbot fut retrouvé en Normandie, où ils possédaient des propriétés extensives. La famille florissait en Normandie, mais Guillaume, qui s'était établi en Angleterre, devenait l'ancêtre de plusieurs maisons nobles distinguées en Angleterre et en Irlande. Un membre notable de cette famille distinguée était John Talbot, comte de Shrewsbury, qui participait dans la bataille de Patay en 1429 contre Jeanne d'Arc, (1373-1453). Pendant ce temps, ils étaient élevés à la noblesse en 1705. La plupart des propriétés de cette famille aristocratique étaient perdues durant la Révolution française qui commençait en 1789. Parmi les membres notables de cette famille à l'époque. il y avait Guillaume Talbot, compte d'Eu.

Au commencement du XVIe siècle, la culture française devint un modèle pour tout l'Europe. L'exploration du Nouveau-Monde était un but prestigieux et profitable pour tous les pays européens. Les explorateurs amenèrent les missionnaires vers les colonies de la Nouvelle-France, la Nouvelle-Hollande, la Nouvelle-Angleterre et la Nouvelle-Espagne. Jacques Cartier fit le premier de ses trois voyages en Nouvelle-France en 1534. Les Jésuites, Samuel de Champlain et les missionnaires le suivirent en 1608. Les plans pour le developpement du Québec n'atteignirent pas les objectifs fixés par la Compagnie de la Nouvelle-France. Champlain amena en Nouvelle-France le premier immigrant authentique, Louis Hébert, un pharmacien parisien et sa famille, qui y arrivèrent 1617.

En 1643, cent neuf ans après le premier débarquement de Cartier, environ trois cent personnes vivaient au Québec. L'immigration se faisait de façon très lente. En Nouvelle-France, on encourageanit les jeunes à se marier dès l'âge de dix-hit ans. Le commerce des fourrures se développa et attira des colons de la France, tant nobles que roturiers. Quinze mille explorateurs partirent de Montréal à la fin des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. En 1675, il y avait sept mille Français au Québec. Dans la même année, la présence acadienne-française en Nouvelle Écosse, au Nouveau-Brunswick et à l'Ile-du Prince-Édouard augmente à cinq cent personnes. En 1755, dix mille acadiens français refusèrent de prêter serment d'allégeance à l'Angleterre et par conséquent furent déportés. Ils se réfugièrent en Louisiane. Dans l'intervalle, la race française prospéra au Québec et fonda le Bas-Canada.

Parmi les colons d'Amérique du Nord du nom Talbot, l'on trouve Jean-Jacques Talbot, qui s'établit au Québec et qui épousa Marie-Charlotte Sommereux à Rivière des Prairiesen 1698; Jean Talbot, qui s'établit au Québec et qui épousa Barbe Fortin à Islet en 1726; Joseph Talbot, qui s'établit au Québec et qui épousa Marie-Madeleine Nolin en 1735.

Plusieurs membres de cette famille renommée étaient importants dans les domaines sociaux, culturels, religieux et politiques , tant en France qu'en Nouvelle-France, comme Dr.Jeannine Talbot, neurologue, Québec, Canada; Robert Talbot, avocat, Montréal, Canada.

Les plus anciennes armoiries retrouvées du nom de famille Talbot étaient composées ainsi qu'il suit: un fond or avec une bande diagonale bleue sur laquelle il y a quatre fleurs-de-lis d'or.

The Solara appeared when Talbot were under the auspices of the PSA group - Peugeot/Citroën/Talbot and therefore it is a very french car. (The Talbot Samba, Peugeot 104 & Citroën LNA are the same car basically)

Talbot today exist as Peugeot/Talbot in Spain - part of the PSA group (Europe). Sadly the only vehicles to have the Talbot Badge nowadays are large comercial ones.

The Solara was not the only saloon in the Talbot range - The Flagship of the Talbot Marque was the Tagora, which looked like a large Solara. The Tagora was available with a 2.2 Litre engine, a Turbo Diesel and a 2.7i V6 which produced 170 bhp. The Peugeot 604 was the equivalent of the Tagora but only had 140 bhp in its V6 version. This was so because the carburettor was different in the Tagora.

The Chrysler Sunbeam Lotus was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1979, but deliveries did not start until summer of that year. By this time, Chrysler UK had been sold to the French Peugeot concern who changed the name to the Talbot Motor Company. With the exception of the very first pre-production models, all road cars were officially known as Talbots.
