We stopped for a snack at Sioux City, IA and found out about Sergeant Floyd. Read the marker (in a picture linked below) to find out why he is unique among the Lewis & Clark expedition.
We had dinner at a 50s style diner (The Market Diner) in Sioux Falls, SD. The meal was very good, and so was the service. They have aspartame in blue packets, sodium saccharin in pink packets, and sucralose in yellow packets. They may have even had sugar!
We stayed overnight at Palisades Park just east of Sioux Falls. We went through a little town on the way to the park named Garretson, and we found a little park that featured "Devil's Gulch" in Garretson. Devil's Gulch's claim to fame is that Jesse James jumped over it on his horse to escape a posse. You can see from the picture of me on the bridge across the gulch that he was clearly nuts to try it. We bought a couple of packets of toasted soybeans in the grocery store in Garretson because soybeans are higher in protein than they are in carbohydrates.
Palisades Park is geologically interesting because all the rocks are pink. I don't know what they do to the outhouses, but they don't stink like you'd expect outhouses to.
