Greater Lenox Organization
Greater Lenox Ambulance Service, Inc. (or GLAS for short) has a unique organizational structure. We are primarily located in a rural area in Northern Madison County, about 30 minutes from Syracuse, NY and about 45 minutes from Utica, NY. Initially, GLAS was formed as a volunteer ambulance. We are still primarily volunteer, but we also have 1 paid New York State Certified Paramedic and 2 paid New York State Certified (NYS) Medics (refer to New York State EMS for a description of the various EMT levels). One of these advanced care level providers is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The remainder of our personnel are volunteer. Our volunteers range from Paramedics to Certified First Responders (CFRs) to Drivers. We arrived at this arrangement through much agonizing and debate. It is just too difficult to attract, train and retain enough volunteers to provide prehospital care on 24 hour basis.
Our command structure is broken into two separate and distinct areas: Operations and Business.
Operations
On the operational side of the house we have a Director of Operations (DO), who has the responsibility of overseeing the day-to-day operations of the ambulance corps. This position manages the overall membership with regards to conformity to operational policies and procedures. Currently AEMT-III Greg Wright, PA holds this position.
Assisting the DO is the Deputy Director of Operations (DDO). This position has the responsibility to assist the DO in the completion of his duties, and must be ready to take over the DO's responsibility in the event the DO is unable to perform. Additionally, the DDO is responsible for the communication equipment. He insures that all members have pagers, the advanced level providers have portable radios and insures that all are operational. EMT-D Vincent DeNova is currently the DDO.
Business
The business side of the organization is primarily responsible for developing strategies and policies that benefit the corporation as a whole and insure its compliance with Federal, State and Local laws and guidelines. This group is composed of a board of directors, headed by a President, and a medical director. The board of directors is elected by the membership from the membership and each position has a staggered term duration, to maintain continuity and corporate memory. Our current President of the Board is EMT-D Todd Rouse. Our Medical Director is Dr. Bonnie Grossman.
