The conservative wing of the Republican party is courting disaster for themselves and the nation by assuming that the average person on the christian right can be counted to vote for them if they press the right hot button. Right now the effective hot buttons seem to be pro-life, anti-same sex marriage, and pro-family.
I believe there are many in the conservative wing that have no interest in any of the above except to win elections. I believe there are some that have moral values that would make Bill Clinton blush but they spout family values to keep the votes coming in. They vote pro-life but when their girlfriend gets pregnant they would take her for an abortion. And they bash gays but who knows what they are doing in private.
Can they assume MY VOTE? No, emphatically, NO.
I am no longer looking for the cause as much as I am looking for the man. A honest man with integrity that disagrees with me on some issues is much more palatable to me. If Ed Kennedy were to run on an anti-abortion, pro-family ticket I would not vote for him. And there are others who's morals are just as questionable. Some of these have been paraded by the Christian Right as "reformed". I want to see the man, see him practice integrity. Then will I begin to put trust in him.
A man I supported in our state (PA) was Bob Casey. He is a man of integrity, I frequently did not agree with him but I supported him at the polls because he LIVED the family values and put his reputation on the line for the pro-life cause. I believe this was not a front. I support our current governor Tom Ridge for the same reason. These two men are from different parties but are both men of honor.
For those who follow PA politics, this is an anomoly, to have two men of this caliber in succession, whether of the same party or not is unusual in PA. If we were to go back to the old days of Harvy Taylor, George Leader, David Laurance, John Fine and Milton Shapp, we find a less than sterling list.
