Thanks for your great site. My son is doing an assignment of Edmund Barton. I was reading your old guestbook and read Sandra from
Sydney 12/16/00 commented that Gough came to power on the 2nd of December 1972. I would also like to agree with her as the 2nd
of December is correct.
I have found this date to be somewhat interesting. I do not
understand why these dates are so confusing. It really depends on what you
read and from what source as to what date is accurate. I guess we will
just have to ask Gough directly to ascertain the true details.

I was interested to see your site, because it deals with the sort of information we have too, but it is impossible to navigate in it. The back function does not work, between
Prime Ministers, and one has to log out completely in order to get back on. Very
frustrating.
I do not have any problem with the back function. It is designed to
be basic and simple so as not to confuse the users. Perhaps it has
something to do with the hosting web site. I will investigate to try and
find the actual reason.

Thank you James for your
comments. I think Gough was reflecting what every Australian thought at the time and tried to do too much too quickly. Probably his biggest downfall was that there were other people too itchy to get into power and reverted to somewhat
controversial tactics to topple the government.

Most helpful, as I am constructing a piece of theatre involving Barton. In Maitland, they want to recreate the occasion when Barton gave a speech from the steps of the Town Hall, as part of his election campaign. Anything other than someone droning on through a ( to modern tastes) long speech. However the local pollies want some parts so the actors will be untrained, and I've no idea of any budget for the performance. I have written plays that have been performed, so here goes !!!
I assume there will be cameras around and an election approaching if the pollies want to perform. {laughing} You should not be concerned about the pollies wanting some of the action because they have supposedly been ACTING in the communities best interest. {another belly laugh} Seriously, I wish you well with your venture and I hope that it goes according to your plan.

In all the years that I have been trying to gather personal information (rather than political) on William Morris Hughes, this is the best and most informative site ever. I have had many books sent to me over the years on him and this site covers a wide variety of topics on him. The reference area to other books on him is by far the best I have ever seen. I am seeking information on Billy Hughes children...Arthur, Ethel, Lily, Dolly, Ernest, and Charles. I would love to hear from a grandchild or close relative of any of the above. I would give my eye teeth for contact with Ethel Hughes-Bourke's relatives (she was oldest daughter of Billy who came to California around 1930). The information I am seeking is important to my family. Billy was a great statesman, I agree, and as the picture reads, "Voluble, volatile, shrewd, and artful" think about how that played out in a home situation....when he was there.
Great comments. Can anyone assist Pamela in her quest to track down the relatives of Billy?

A correction - in the list of countries visited you omit Japan, which Menzies visited in 1957 (unless 'Taipan' is actually Japan). Also you should note that the second volume of A. W. Martin's biography of Menzies, covering the period from 1944 to 1978, as published in 1999. Apart from these minor quibbles, the site is informative and accurate - unlike some others I've seen.
Great input Antony. As you can see, the data is becoming a little outdated due to my lack of investigative time to pursue the facts thoroughly. I thank you for the input and will update the information.

From memory, Gough came to power on December 2, 1972, not December 5th as you state at the top of page. I remember the evening well.
A Parliamentary Inquiry is under way for this statement. Stay tuned. Well the jury is back and the overwhelming response was that the 5 Dec 1972 is indeed correct. The political documentation from Australia's Parliament House even confirms the date. If you have firm evidence to the
contrary, please forward it for verification. Thanks for dropping by.

Very interesting site, it appears to be crammed with information, but when are you planning to append information on latest prime ministers? How about more on the opposition leaders and smaller Partys? Perhaps you could consider adding a section about the Queen!!!!!
Plans are on the drawing board for improvements but the priority is to detail each PM up to the current incumbent before these are considered further. I guess I will have to start putting together a small bio for the next Prime Minister, commonly known at the moment, as Mr Costello.

My name is not important but lets say it's Tim. I am an Australian citizen and as such I'm disgraced in the fact that we (Australians) don't know our national anthem although I do know the whole national anthem (Both
verses). Yes, I wish that more people were taught our full National Anthem in school and not just the half that people know but the other half as well. It begins, 'Beneath our radiant Southern Cross We'll toil with hearts and hands; To make this Commonwealth of ours Renowned of all the lands; For those who've come across the seas We've boundless plains to share; With courage let us all combine To Advance Australia Fair. In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair.' So why
don't we Australians sing this half anymore? I'd really like to know why we dropped this half from the football,
Olympics, and everything else you can email me at timtam63@yahoo.com if you have a answer that can answer me. From Tim Australian citizen
Thank you for your comments Tim. I believe that the National Anthem is sung at all major events to voice our pride of being Australian. Even when our Anthem was 'God Save the Queen', we only sang the first verse. His Excellency, the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, issued the following Proclamation on 19 April 1984: 'snipped' shall consist of the first four bars and the last four bars of the tune known as Advance Australia Fair. Hope this answers your question.

I had to go to the library and get books about it!!
Hopefully, this site
will not alleviate the requirement to go to the library and do further research. It is intended to give a starting point and an overall heads up of our history and direction. Thank you for your supporting comments.

Watching the Olympics and was surprised that "Advance Australia Fair" was the national anthem - I thought it was "Waltzing Matilda". So ... went to the internet here in the USA and found your website. I just turned 55 and fondly remember my youth when I
lived in Wahroonga and went to Abbotsleigh. I remember singing this!!!!
Good on you Nahzhean. The
point you made about the National Anthem is a good one. We are a young country and evolving from the shadow of our motherland, Great Britain. As this site indicates, we have recently adopted a new anthem and as we head into the Olympics with our wealth of sporting talents, this anthem should become more familiar. Although it was not a resounding popular choice, it was selected over Waltzing Matilda because the words meant a lot more to our pride and esprite decore. Waltzing Matilda is also a ballad, not an anthem. Good comment.

Cool site. I'm doing an assignment and this one is the best site I have been to so far, but I need help. This is my question: Where does the prime minister live while in office? And which prime minister broke that rule? Please help, it is due tomorrow and that question is the only one I can't find.
Thank you for the comments. Sorry about the delay in getting back to answer you. The Prime Ministers primary residence in Canberra is the Lodge and is situated next to the New Parliament House. The residence in Sydney is Kirribili House. I think that Prime Minister Howard spends more time in Sydney than he does in Canberra. I hope that helps you.

Thank you Travis. A very interesting period but somewhat sad for all Australians to reflect on. Although it is a sad period, we should still overflow with a sense of pride for our forefathers who used their courage, wit, humour and good old Aussie ingenuity to defeat the enemy of the people. Good luck with your research.

Your information is good. However there is a recent publication which has a rare comment. It indicates that Andrew Fisher was renowned for his integrity and ethics - something
extremely rare in persons who become Prime Minister. I have a good scanned photo from a newspaper some years ago which I kept. I can send it one day to you. I do not believe Andrew Fisher has received the recognition he should have in our history books. By the way, I believe there are Fisher descendants alive and well in Australia. Dr William Maloney MP for Melbourne also spoke of Andrew Fisher in the highest terms. Regards, KM
I agree with the comment on ethics and integrity. A very rare resource in our leaders these days. Thanks for the comments.

Hey, I was browsing through the site trying to find an email to get in touch with the site manager but all I could find was this Guestbook. I've entered the Australian Schools Web Challenge and require pictures of the Australian Prime Ministers during the period of the 1940's. So I'm here asking for the permission to use the portraits of Ben Chifley, John Joseph Curtin, Sir Arthur William Fadden, Michael Forde and Robert Gordon Menzies on the website. They will be used appropriately on the site and for non-profit. Please return an answer as this is the only website that I have been able to find that has the pictures of them all. An excellent site you have here, keep up the good work! -John

My dear fellow - Thank you for a page that does justice to the greatest system of government in the world. As one of those people who have an interest in Australian politics, I found your page both insightful and informative - more informative, in fact, than at the Australian Parliamentary Library itself. Apart from the fact that several of your more interesting leaders are cursed with broken links (Chifley, Keating, Howard), my only concern is that you have recently stripped the biography from several pages. Among these was that of Sir Robert Menzies - one of the better-written biographies, as well as my favourite PM. But these minor defects not withstanding, you have put together a superb page. Bravo!
Thank you. With words of encouragement like you have given, it is hard not to continue to supply the information. I am going to fix the broken links so that the site does justice to our leaders and hopefully people will return for another look. Thank you again.

hey, cool page. It gave me heaps on Barton for my school assignments. Do you have anything on people invloved in federation. Sean.
Happy to be of service to your research. Not in a position to assist with other people of federation but there are enormous amounts of information in the library.

I have two questions for you if I may. How long has Australia had women's suffrage and How many women serve in your parliament currently? I am working on a potential research / presentation paper for a regional sociology conference. I teach both sociology and political sciences courses. Thanks for your assistance. BSM

Good, but a bit of useless information could be deleted. Please add in more info about what Fraser did in politics.
Thank you for your comments. Point taken about the useless information but people have asked for the extra input. The information is always being updated and will be applied to each individual after it has been verified and proven correct. As you can imagine, this is time consuming.

I required more information concerning Hughes conflicts with Woodrow Wilson.
Sorry. I do not have any worthwhile information that would benefit you. Maybe you could research the topic in your local library. Good luck in your quest.

Thanks heaps for this site - it really helped me with my work and gave me heaps of info on Barton. It's a really cool site, but maybe you could make it a bit smaller!
Thanks for the input. Will look at redeveloping the site to load quicker and contain relevant information.

Very good I am doing a project on Prime Ministers of Australia.
Have you met any real Prime Ministers? I noticed that you live in the Capitol Territory (well nearby anyhow).
