James was born November 19, 1973 at Henderson General Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario to Douglas and Leona Buss. |

James has an older brother, Jeff, and a younger brother, Glen. |

James performed in musicals and Christmas programs at church. Here he is singing Self-Control from The Music Machine. |

James always did well in school. In fact, he earned first place in the school science fair for his project on seed germination. Despite that, Carla doesn't think James would make a very good farmer. |

When James was growing up, the family often vacationed at their trailer at Elim Lodge near Peterborough, Ontario; however, sometimes the family went on special vacations such as Ottawa, Ontario. |

One summer, the family went to Florida, USA to the Kennedy Sace Center in Cape Canaveral and to Walt Disney World in Orlando. |

James even took a trip by himself. In the summer of 1993, James spent six weeks in the Philippines, working with missionaries and churches there. |

After high school, James attended Canadian Bible College in Regina, Saskatchewan, for one and a half years. |
|
 |
Later, James attended McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature. |

James returned to Regina, Saskatchewan in June 1998 for educational reasons. Leaving school, James rented an apartment and worked full-time instead. It was in 1999 when he was introduced to Carla. |
