Class Song
DESPITE VOTE, MCCUTCHEON CHOOSES SONG ANYWAY
In the beginning of November the seniors at McCutcheon High School were called to the auditorium. The meeting was for information about caps and gowns and all that other good stuff all seniors go through. One of the things we did was vote on Class Motto, Class Flower (don't ask why we have a class flower because I have no clue) and Class song.
As expected, I thought the class motto choices were pretty lame, but one thing I didn't anticipate was the choices for the school song.
The choices for school song was funny, because there were no choices, it said "Yes" or "No." I was confused until they explained that they claimed that they were having a hard time finding a song that did not make references to drugs, sex, or alcohol and that they had written their own song for our class. The whole idea seemed gay to me. From there matters only got worse...
The song was absolutely horrible (to give you an idea, the songs title is (fearlessly be yourself). I estimate that over 90% of the class voted "No" for the song. I felt pretty sure the song did not have a chance at being class song, it slipped my mind that the administration could possibly practice their communist like authority.
Even though the class voted no for this dumb song, the adminstration was nice enough to make it our class song anyways, and I honestly know nobody that likes the song or the decision to make it class song, except maybe the 2 student council that wrote it.
So basically, our own senior class has absolutely no control as to what OUR own class's song is. This is the song, and there is nothing we can do about it. Now I understand the motto was probably going to be dumb, and I didn't even care what the hell the flower was going to be, since I didn't even know what the flowers listed was, but the song I wanted to be a good one and it should have been. Them saying that all the songs suggested make references to drugs, sex, or alcohol is a bunch of b.s. and they know it.
Good Riddance by Green Day would have been a good class song, I've heard it suggested a few times, I'm not sure why it was never considered or if it was why it wasn't picked. Or how about Closing Time by Semisonic or whoever the hell sings it (I don't like Closing Time, but compared to that song we have now I'd prefer about anything other then the one we have.) Some of my suggestions, as a joke I know they'd never make it, were Another Brick In The Wall pt. 2 by Pink Floyd, School's Out For Summer by Alice Cooper, Long Hard Road Out Of Hell by Marilyn Manson (I know people don't want that these songs, they're my personal preferences.)
The most obvious explanation I have heard for this is that last year they made a senior video and the class song was not a song they made themselves. So when they put the class song in the background of the senior video they could not sell the video because of copyright violations, therefore the school couldn't profit from us. So this year they decided to make an original song so they could use it on the senior video. Well I say screw em.
My point is, it is our class, our year, our song. If we had the majority of the class vote for Fearlessly be yourself then that's just too bad for me, but we voted no and why the hell did the idiots take a vote if they were just going to override the vote anyways? Since this song was just written by a couple of students, we will never hear it on the radio and more than likely never hear it again other than at graduation. After this year, if anyone asks me or if it comes up I'm claiming Good Riddance as my class song, because I'm ashamed to be in the same class with the people who wrote this song. I'll just pray that "Fearlessly Be Yourself" does not give me nightmares.
