Loved your site. I was told by my dad that his grandfather Alfred
Hawks was born on the Cherokee Res. My records show that Alfred Drury Hawks
was born in Carrol county Va Dec., 12 1855. His father was Henry Hawks
and Henry's dad was Abraham Hawks. If anyone has info on these men I would
be so grateful. I've always been proud of my Cherokee heritage. I would
be disappointed if i'm not, but no less facinated by Cherokee history and
the wonderful Cherokee people. Is there a list of cherokee surnames Ica

Many years ago as a child of about eight or nine my parents and
I visited what was then a Cherokee village on he reservation. My father
was bargained with by the Chief to allow me to stay with him, but he told
the Chief that he was taking me and my mothe and brother to a warmer climate
because of my health and the cold winters. It seems to have had an early
influence on my life because I have been married to a man whose father
was half Cherokee and half French for nearly forty years. His mother was
nearly full-blood Muscogee. We have been trying to find out more on his
ancest y to preserve it for our children and grandchildren. I want them
to know the cultures, traditions, religion, everything there is to know
about their ancestors. The only thing my husband can remember about his
grandmother is that she was blind and her NA name was something to do with
a bird. His father was born in 1881 in Live Oak, Florida and his mother
in 1910 in Freeport, Florida on the Bruton Route. His grandfather was one
of five French brothers who came to the states in either the late 1700s
or ea ly 1800s. His grandfather married his Cherokee grandmother and made
a home with her in Florida. My husband was too young to undestand the importance
of kowing who his ancestors were and has lost a lot of needed information.
I too have Cherokee in my ancestory on my father's side I have even seen
a picture of him possessed by my uncle in West Virginia wearing the bib-overalls
of a working man. Their family name is Workman and my father's name was
Blake. Please help me to understand the old ways as w lls the new. I have
many books on the Cherokee but all are written by white authors and only
wet my appetite for more. I want my children to be able to look back proudly
and speak with knowledge of their ancestors. Thank you for reading this
small quest and I hope it has somehow let you know that I am sincere and
not just another white person looking to bamboozle your people. Walk in
light and may your days be filled with happiness. Mary Chamblee

I have alwys been told my grandfather was Native American, believed
to be Cherokee. His mother was said to be Cherokee, and it is believed
his father may have been also, but no family records found so far. My grandfather's
name was Buck Payton, his father was Wiley, and his mother Lettie or Phoebe.
They lived in both Georgia and South Carolina, moving back and forth over
the years. They lived for some time in Elberton Ga., and in Abbieville
County, SC. They resided in Clinton SC at the time of his death. He was
born on July 16,1900, and died in Oct 1984. He married Pearl Dutton. Any
info would be greatly appreciated as the elders in the family have died
and with them the information about my grandfathers family. My grandfather
also had two brothers, Clinton and Grady, and a sister Inez. I do not know

Several of my family went West on Trail of Tears as guards or soldiers
and one supposedly married a Cherokee.

First, I enjoyed your site. Second, I would like any information
on Flowers and Boner (Father's side-Western) or Deering and Heflin (Mother's
side-Eastern). Anyone with any information on either of these geneologies
please respond.
