CONVENTION / CONFERENCE NEWS

The final hurdle towards Convention 2000 was overcome yesterday, when the United Workers Party held it’s 3rd Annual Conference of Delegates at the La ressource Parish Centre.

Yesterday’s delegates were welcomed by former candidate in the 1997 General Elections, for the constituency of Dennery North, Mr. Marcus Nicholas, who urged members to maintain the spirit of unity that the U.W.P. is known for, as the Party prepares for the next General Elections.

The Conference also received the Annual Zonal Conferences Report from General Secretary, Mr. Stephenson King.  The highlight of yesterday’s Conference of Delegates was the nomination of officers, to fill the various positions on the Party’s National Executive.  

Among the various nominees made for the top leadership positions were: 

Chairman: Mr. Eldridge Stephens and Mr Rufus Bousquet.

1st Dep. Chairman: Mr. Rufus Bousquet, Mr. Bain Nathaniel and Michael Flood

2nd Deputy Chariman: Ms. Angel Brouet and Mr. Michael Flood.

Political Leader: Dr. Vaughan Lewis, and Dr. Morella Joseph who  withdrew, from the race.

Deputy Leader: Dr Morella Joseph, Mr. Karl Daniel and Mr. Zepherine Francis

When the Party convenes its 31st Annual Convention and meeting of the Island Council, in Vieux-Fort South on Sunday 15th October 2000 delegates will then cast their ballot to finally determine the composition of the leadership of  the Party for the 2000/2001 administrative year of the Party.

 Well over 300 delegates, observers and Party officials attended the Conference.

A total of 277 delegates and Party officials will on Sunday 17th September 2000 gather at the La Resource Community Centre in Dennery-North, for the 3rd Annual Conference of Delegates, of the United Workers Party.

 

Sunday’s Conference of Delegates follows the successful staging of the Northern and Southern Zonal Conferences, which were held at Castries and Choiseul a few weeks ago.

 

At Sunday’s meeting the delegates representing the 17 constituency branches throughout the Island will receive reports on this years round of Zonal Conferences, the Youth Arm and the Women’s Arm.  Resolutions for consideration will also be presented and debated, before forwarding to the Annual Convention for final determination.

 

The high point of Sunday’s Conference will be the nomination of officers for the 2000/2001 National Executive and Board of Trustees.  It is expected that upon the conclusion of the day’s business the Party membership will have a clear indication of what the face of the management team of the Party is likely to be, come Convention Day on October 15, 2000.
