Contemporary Artist, Poet and Spanish Civil War Veteran
Emanuel Hochberg, beloved family member, Spanish Civil War veteran (VALB), World
War II veteran and fighter of the good fight all his life, died April 28th at age 89.
May He Rest in Peace.

They Still Draw Pictures
A collection of over 600 drawings made during the Spanish Civil War by
Spanish school children, both in Spain and in refugee centers in France,
rendered in pencil, crayon, ink, and watercolor. The drawings were
collected under the auspices of the Spanish Board of Education and the
Carnegie Institute of Spain, and some of them were published for the
American Friends Service Committee to raise funds for children’s relief
efforts in Spain.
Vlady Painter of Paradoxes (Victor Serge's son)
Born in Petrograd during the civil war. His father, Victor Serge, wrote, "I spent
nights at the defence outposts, with the communists. My pregnant wife came to
sleep in back, in an ambulance. Wrapped in a towel were a few clothes and our
most precious objects, so that we could meet during the battle and beat a retreat
together along the Neva" (Mémoire d'un révolutionnaire, Seuil, 1951, p. 103;
translation).

Pierre Daura - His Life and Paintings
In 1937, at the age of 41, Daura joined the Spanish Republican
army as a volunteer to fight against the forces of Franco during the
Spanish Civil War. He served as a forward artillery observer, was
badly wounded in the battle of Teruel, and sent home to France to
convalesce.

Buried Mirror
The Buried Mirror/El espejo enterrado is a video essay written and narrated by the Mexican
writer and social commentator Carlos Fuentes. The series of five video programs tells the story of
Spanish and Latin American civilizations from the beginnings of history to the present time. The
video series was funded by the Quinto Centenario of Spain and the Smithsonian Institution. It was
first broadcast on the Discovery Channel in the Spring of 1992.
In the winter of 1992 Project FLAME put together a small interactive multimedia application based
on part of Carlos Fuentes' narrative which covered the Spanish Civil War.
