Assembly Election:

Valied votes cast: 967,229
Invalid votes: 4,724
Total number of voters: 971,953

Votes cast for Party Lists:

Kurdistan Democratic Party                         (KDP): 438,979 (45,3 %)
Patriotic Union of Kurdistan                         (PUK): 423,833 (43,8 %)
Islamic Movement                                         (IM ): 49,108 (5,1 %)
Kurdistan Socialist Party                              (PASOK):24,882 (2,6 %)
Iraqi Communist Party                                 (ICP): 21,123 (2,2 %)
Kurdistan Popular Dem. Party                     (KPDP): 9,903 (1,0 %)
Independent Democrats                                  (ID): 501 (-)

SEAT ALLOCATION IN ASSEMBLY

After reallocation of 105517 votes of five party lists below 7% threshold to the two remaining parties in the relative proportion they polled, the final votes as follows:

KDP....491497,5......(50,8)
PUK....475731,5......(49,2)

The 100 Assembly seats were therefore allocated 51 to KDP and 49 to PUK but the KDP ceded one seat to PUK to enable the Assembly to be divided evenly 50-50.

The first time in modern history democratic elections were held in Kurdistan in which several political parties took part, tens of international observers watched these elections.

Thus a Kurdish parliament was established in Erbil which formed a federal government and the legal system began to work. This was considered the biggest achievement of the Kurdish people and a brave democratic experiment in the Middle East.

During the past years parliament has passed several important laws regarding administration, political parties, the press, the economy, the culture, society and etc.after some lively discussions.

Parliamentary process and serious work attracted popular attention and respect. The Kurdish parliament establish relations with many other parliaments in the world, almost every foreign delegation to Kurdistan visited the Kurdish parliament in Erbil.
