Don't ban guns. --- Change them.
It would be silly to leave law-abiding citizens at the mercy of their less abiding couterparts, who will still be circulating illegal weapons long after the start of a gun-ban. Rather change from killer guns to stun-guns. The reality of the matter is that as long as law abiding citizens remain the lawful owners of potential murder weapons, potential murderers will have relatively easy access to them too.
More sophisticated weapons that can fairly quikly disable a specimen or an attacker without permanent damage are already the state of the art in research circles. If a dart gun can fell an elephant, then many other things are possible.
There are many advantages to this stategy. The most important being that killer-guns can be formally banned without leaving anyone without defence. Law abiding people will be less hesitant to use non destructive weapons in defense, and perpetrators will be more hesitant to commit crimes with killer weapons, facing high penalties for mere possession. Hunting with stun-guns has already become a fine art. It leaves the sport hunter with more options than the more primitive slug-slingers of old. A stunned animal can be transported without a mess to wherever it has to be processed or kept. Trophies are not damaged, and prey can be revived or kept preserved on the hoof, so to speak.
It looks like a good time for an alternative weapons industry to take off now. The old fire-arms manufacturing craft has more or less reached a saturation point, while the stunning industry still has a long way to go.
Stunning can be done by injecting a chemical, usually by means of a projected dart, by gassing and by induction. Each of these methods has plenty of scope for refinement to a commercial level. It is true that if stunners were to replace firearms, that a new technology will be available to the crime world. As a matter of fact, it is already there. If 'normal' society is too conservative in this regard, it will literally fall behind in an arms race of sorts. Regular citizens in a democratic world should remain armed against aberrant fellow citizens as much as againt the possibility of aberrant governments with totalitarian notions.
Every perspective may reveal a different aspect of the problems we face from day to day.
