Francisco Labastida, former Mexican Secretario de Gobernación (Minister of Inner Affairs) was given today an overwhelming victory over his strongest rival, Roberto Madrazo, in the primary elections of the ruling Partidor Revolucionario Institucional- Institutional Revolutionary Party.
Ernesto Zedillo, the Presidente, has given an address calling all the members of his party, the PRI, to stay together. Labastida was accussed several times of having direct support from Presidente Ernesto Zedillo and from "Hard" governors like Roberto Albores, Governor of the troubled State of Chiapas. Less known is that Emilio Gamboa, former Secretary of the Presidency, former Secretary of Communications and Transportation, and a member of Labastida's staff in both the Ministry of Inner Affairs and in his Campaign for the Presidency of Mexico has been accussed by Antonio Valle, U.S. Department of Justice analyst, of being heavyly linked to druglords like Juan García, one of the most violent cocaine smugglers to the United States. Labastida himself has been accussed by Madrazo's spokesman of having an unexplained fortune of over 360 million dollars. Labastida was also implied by a famous American newspaper of being too much soft on drug dealing in Sinaloa, the State he ruled about a decade ago.
Another interesting fact is the running aground of the U$600,000 private yacht of Miguel Yunes, who was Labastida's subordinate at the Ministry of Inner Affairs. The yacht ran aground near the Northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. When the Navy checked it out, they found 1000 pounds of cocaine.
Can the United States trust a man who includes in his staff someone accussed of having links to illegal drug organizations?
