APPEAL FOR FUNDS

The Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) is appealing for funds and any kind of donations to help its election campaign. We are a party of the poor and the downtrodden. We believe in serious work and that is why the candidates we are fielding have to serve in an area at least 5 years before being allowed to stand in the constituency.

Our candidates - Dr. Mohd Nasir Hashim, V.Selvam and Dr. Kumar are the people who have done a lot of work for the people in the last 20 years. All of them will be standing for the first time under the PSM banner.

PSM has been denied registration by the Home Ministry without any reason. PSM has recently taken the Home Ministry to court to challenge the decision. This is the first time a political party has taken the Home Ministry to court for not registering a party.

PSM believes in the people and in the struggle for equality. PSM intents to stand in the 1999 general election in three areas it has done work over the years. PSM also intends to highlight the socialist cause in the elections.

This is our first shot at election. People have told us that to win elections,we do not have to do work hard, but just say and do the right thing during the campaign. They call it election strategy, we say it is unfair shortcut, irresponsible and opportunistic. We are trying to be as decent as we can, as we believe principles do mean something to the people. Life is not just about bribery, graft and corruption. Therefore, we need your help to get our message to the people. We need your support to fund our decent and honest campaign.

EXPENDITURE:
ally a candidate will spend, at least, between RM 50,000 and RM 100,000 in the elections. PSM, after really, really cutting its projected expenditures to the bare minimum, still needs RM53,000 for all its three constituencies. At the moment, PSM has about RM10,000 (from fund raising dinner) and still needs to raise another RM43,000 in the next one week. This however, does not include the nomination deposits that will cost us another RM11,000.

DO NOT HAVE CRONIES, ONLY COMRADES
g a socialist party, our friends and comrades are made up of mostly workers, urban settlers and farmers. Most of them are helping us one way or another. For example our plantation workers in Sungai Siput and Klang areas are making our flags manually, as we cannot afford to print them. The food for our election workers is sponsored by numerous kampungs(villages)around Subang while a lot of them are willing to spare their labor for us.But we need money to print leaflets, to highlight the issues of the poor and to allow people to vote for us.

We do not ride on racial and religious issue. Therefore as far as Malaysian politics is concerned, people say we cannot go far. We are quite sad that even some poor people believe that politics is only for the rich. Ironically these rich politicians will determine the poor's future. We believe in equality and justice across the racial and religious lines. We intend to stick to that principles. We are standing as independent candidates. Not because we want to but because the Alternative Front whose manifesto we are supporting do not have "extra" seats to spare us.

Our candidates are the people who have contributed a lot for the struggle and are doing grassroots work. The grassroots feel and think very strongly that we must field candidates in the elections. PSM has always struggled all the time with the oppressive capitalist system and the communal politics, which the system supports. Therefore being independent means, we cannot seek assistance from other Opposition political parties whom we are sure are much richer than we are.

Neither are we sponsored by the ruling parties to split any votes. We intend to oppose Barisan Nasional (BN) at all cost, as it is our struggle against capitalism.

If we are chosen, we will not jump into BN camp, as some people are expected to do so. Anyway, if we are really sponsored by BN, we would not be asking you any money, right?

Our party has not been registered, and according to the law, we cannot seek funds officially using the party's name. We have opened accounts on individuals names.

We do not have much time left but your contribution would help not only our struggle but millions of poor people in Malaysia. At least, they will know that we are fighting for them.
