At last, it seems as if SOMETHING is going to be done about the site of where the Opera House used to stand before it was ravished by the Germans during World War Two, on the night of April 7, 1942!
Unfortunately, however, after more than half a century of doing nothing, the Present Prime Minister, Dr.Alfred Sant, or his advisors, are RUSHING into the matter instead of considering the matter with the seriousness and caution it deserves. IF AND WHEN SOMETHING IS BUILT THIS IS GOING TO BE THERE FOREVER AND CANNOT BE MODIFIED OR ADJUSTED!! IT WOULD BE A PERMANENT BUILDING !!
It is very evident that the Maltese DO NOT want any more shopping malls or commercial premises ESPECIALLY ON THE SITE OF THE OLD THEATRE !
The vast majority of the Maltese want the Old Opera house to be re-built AS IT WAS before it was destroyed during the war with the addition of modern facilities so that someday we will be able to enjoy the great operas that used to be staged and also some of the modern musicals like CATS, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and other similar CULTURAL items ! Everybody knows that the Manoel Theatre is restricted both in size and modern facilities and the fact that this is only a stone throw away from the site of the Old Theatre makes not one bit of difference !
The re-building of the site MUST be very carefully and meticulously planned and executed and enough time has to be allowed for such plans to be developed. We CANNOT afford to build something haphazardly JUST FOR THE SAKE OF HAVING BUILT IT !!
ALL MALTESE, should voice their opinion on the subject and should write to the Prime Minister, the ministers concerned (or ALL ministers) the Planning Authority, the Local Councils and the newspapers to express their views on the matter; after all this IS our heritage !
How much the project costs is IRRELEVANT. If need be the Government should find means to collect the money from ALL parties concerned for the damages the whole Maltese Nation incurred blamelessly during the war. The George Cross awarded to the Maltese Islands for its bravery and endurance will not help much in the re-building of such a great heritage.
