The Patrienish Hockey League · Patríenic Soxití Hockíe

In Patria, the puck drops here!

goalie
Welcome to the Patrienish Hockey League's home page.  The PHL is Patria's premier professional hockey league, consisting of only six teams - just like the National Hockey League used to be before the great dilution of 1967.  Just like the NHL of yore, the PHL plays a 70-game schedule.  Numerous home-and-home series develop sometimes bitter rivalries.  In the Kamala Cup playoffs, the first place team plays the team finishing fourth, while the second and third place finishers face off in another semi-final.  The winners advance to the Kamala Cup finals, and the playoffs are done by early May. Unlike the NHL, the PHL has never suffered through a strike or lockout and played a full 2004-05 season!

Before the opening face-off, as the teams line up at the blue lines, please rise for Patria's national anthem.

2007-08 final standings and Kamala Cup playoff scores

Below are the team logos and profiles of each of the PHL's franchises.

Castoropolis CenturionsCASTOROPOLIS CENTURIONS

Home: Castoropolis, FDC
Arena: Columbia Street Arena (capacity: 16,485)
Colours: Forest green and white
Radio flagship: PMC (846 kHz)
Ice Chips: The Centurions have long been the PHL's flagship franchise, despite their lack of success in recent years.  Their 1998-99 Kamala Cup championship was their first PHL title in 24 years.  Kids in Patria dream of playing for the Centurions much like Canadian kids dream of playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs.  The Columbia Street Arena is as much of a hockey shrine as Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens.  But like the Leafs, the Centurions on-ice product has been disappointing to say the least in recent years. The Cents experimented with wearing Roman numerals on their jerseys.  But when a player who wore #38 couldn't fit XXXVIII on his back, the idea was abandoned.

Lazuria Black BaronsLAZURIA BLACK BARONS
Home: Port Madhu, Lazuria
Arena: Lazuria Gardens (capacity: 15,700)
Colours: Black and gold
Radio flagship: PMEN (1566 kHz)
Ice Chips: The Black Barons were the PHL's dominant team through the 1990s, winning five Kamala Cups during the decade as well as the first Cup of the new millennium.  Although the Barons have suffered through a few "rebuilding" years since then, the "Gallery Gods", the extremely loud, drunken fans in the cheap seats of Lazuria Gardens, can still give the Barons a huge home-ice advantage.

Caesarea VioletsCAESAREA VIOLETS
Home: Hameshvara, Caesarea
Arena: Caesarea Square Garden (capacity: 16,800)
Colours: Violet (purple) and orange
Radio flagship: PHN (1251 kHz).  In Castoropolis, the Violets games are broadcast on PMBC (1152 kHz).
Ice Chips: The Violets are the Centurions' main and often bitter rivals.  They share some of the fan base with the Centurions, as much of the Precinct of Caesarea consists of the greater Castoropolis area's suburban sprawl.  A Cents-Violets game is as much of a battle as the Leafs vs. Canadiens in the Original Six era.

Nova Columbia CondorsNOVA COLUMBIA CONDORS

Home: Kayavarohan, Nova Columbia
Arena: Nova Columbia Memorial Arena (capacity: 14,257)
Colours: Red and gold
Radio flagship: PTOR (963 kHz)
Ice Chips: The Condors home arena has the smallest ice surface in the PHL, much like the old Boston Garden.  It's even got rat-infested dressing rooms, like the Bruins' former home. Condors fans are known for throwing plastic or rubber rats on the ice when the home team scores.

Arboria BeaversARBORIA BEAVERS
Home: Vanarpurí (Forest City), Arboria
Arena: Civic Arena (capacity: 15,900)
Colours: Brown, green, white
Radio flagship: PMIB (720 kHz)
Ice Chips: The team's name has become the butt of many bad jokes ("Save a tree, eat a beaver", "If you're Patrienish, show us your beaver!").  After several years out of the playoffs, and finishing dead last in 2001-02, the Beavers went from worst to first in 2002-03, taking the Kamala Cup (the team's first since 1989-90) thanks to the blessings of SRM-Amrita House Leader Mata Amritanandamayi (Arboria is Ammachi's adopted home state in Patria). They successfully defended their Kamala Cup championship in 2004, but were unable to "three-peat" in 2004-05. The Beavers they knocked off the Centurions in five games in the semi-finals, they blew a 3 game to 1 lead to the Violets in the 2005 Kamala Cup final.

Centralia CrusadersCENTRALIA CRUSADERS
Home: Mahakala, Centralia
Arena: Fraser Arena (capacity: 16,200)
Colours: Orange and black
Radio flagship: PMCH (540 kHz)
Ice Chips: After languishing in the PHL's basement for much of the 1990s, the Crusaders became a contending team in the new millennium. In 2002-03 they knocked off the defending Kamala Cup champion Castoropolis Centurions in a semi-final series that went the full seven games, with three games decided in double or triple overtime, but lost the Kamala Cup finals to the Arboria Beavers. In 2005-06, they claimed their first Kamala Cup in 15 seasons, knocking off Arboria in 6 games.
