I've been lucky enough to see Garth in concert twice. The first time was in 1996 in Cleveland Ohio. That was the 2nd stop on his Fresh Horses Tour. Then I saw him in Columbus Ohio during the summer of 1997. That night was really amazing. Garth was obviously more comfortable the show format. The most incredible thing about that show was Garth's energy. It was about 90 degrees that night, with very very high humidity. I was sweating profusely in shorts and a tshirt. Garth was running around on stage, like he normally does, in jeans, long sleeve shirt, and hat. We couldn't believe Garth's energy. For over 2 hours, he was running around on stage, doing his best to entertain all the people. It was really incredible to behold.
This ear, I got to see another legend of country music in concert: George Strait. I saw part of his Country Music Festival that he took on the road this year. I saw Faith Hill, John Michael Montgomery, Tim McGraw, and George Strait. The ticket price was a little high, but when you think that if I had bought seperate tickets for all of these artists, I would have paid a lot more. But it was a great show. George and Garth present two very different types of shows. Garth's shows are about him having fun and watching the antics onstage, as well as the music. George's shows are all about the music. There are no antis, very little hoopla, and a minimal set. You go to see George sing his songs. Quite a different atmosphere. Both shows are equally good. They are just difference.
I've seen some of the big pop groups in concert, and I can honestly say I enjoyed Garth and George hundreds of times more. I worked the U2 Concert in Ohio Stadium 2 years ago, and I didn't like that concert much. They didn't sing their old favorites, prefering to sing from their new album almost exclusively. They also made the audience wait almost 45 minutes between the opening band and when they came on. For contrast, Garth seems to feel like anything more than a 20 minute wait is too much for the audience. U2 also had a lot of gimicks. The most interesting thing to watch was their big Video screen, which really didn't add much to the show, but provided a distraction.
Some of my other favorite artist are Reba McEntire, Travis Triit, Alan Jackson and LeAnne Rhimes. I haven't seen any of these people in concert, but given the opportunity, would do so. There are other types of music that I listen to, but Country would definately be my favorite type.
