I got my undergraduate degree in Portuguese Language and Literature from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS, Porto Alegre RS, Brazil) in 1987. In 1988 I started my Masters in Linguistics at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP, Campinas SP, Brazil). The dissertation was about the semantics and the syntax of adjectives, and it was supervised by Rodolfo Ilari and Carlos Franchi. The defense happened only in 1992, the same year I began my PhD at the University of Leiden, in the "Holland Institute of Generative Linguistics" (HIL), now part of the "Leiden University Centre for Linguistics" -- ULCL. My PhD dissertation, supervised by Johan Rooryck and Frits Beukema, was about Binding Theory: although it concentrates on certain aspects of Brazilian Portuguese, it also provides many in-depth studies of pronouns and reflexives of other languages like English, Dutch, German, Icelandic and Russian. I think one of its main theoretical contributions was a contraint-interaction account of long-distance binding based on Reinhart & Reuland (1993)'s Chain Condition.

The dissertation was defended in 1999, but I was back to Brazil earlier, in 1997, when I started teaching General Linguistics and Syntax at the Graduate Program in Letters of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul -- PPGL/PUCRS (Porto Alegre RS, Brazil). I stayed in this position up to August 2005, when I left for a brief teaching experience at the Institute of Language Studies of UNICAMP -- IEL/UNICAMP (Campinas SP, Brazil). In March 2006 I assumed the post of Professor in Linguistics at the Department of Linguistics and Philology of the Faculty of Letters of UFRGS (Porto Alegre RS, Brazil), returning to my 'academic berth' after 20 years!
