The
UP HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
was founded in
1974, the same year when Horticulture became autonomous from the
Department of Agronomy. From that time on, a number of horticulture
students planned and organized themselves into a society and gave the name
U.P. Horticultural Society.
Membership then was acquired automatically if one was a major of
Horticulture.
For a society so young that needed a lot
of improvement in the social cultural and economic aspects, it was left
crippled and helpless when almost every active member was a candidate for
graduation. Furthermore, recruitment of new members was not given
emphasis. Hence, the society became inactive for one year.
The revival year in 1976 came and this
became the momentous year where every member wanted to accomplish one
thing. To save the society from its downfall. The outcome was very
promising with the revision of the constitution. Only those who were
willing to undergo a series of screening and final rites were allowed to
join.
From then on, the society continues to
push its way up as it resumes the traditional activities: The annual Crop
Science and Horticulture Quiz Contests, Flower and Garden Show, CLASH and
other extension activities on nearby communities which keep the members
relatively busy.
Furthermore, the
UP
Horticultural Society became the
Most Outstanding Academic Organization in the whole UP system in 1988. It
continues to be one of the Most Outstanding Organizations in
UPLB
through the years.
Up to the present, the society
still continues to become a bigger and better family, as it continues to
promote its goal: HORTICULTURE FOR THE
PEOPLE!
