Posted on September 7, 2001 by Ginette BenoitHey everyone! yes, I'm still in Edmonton and only have 5 minutes to write before the red light goes on in the studio and I have to be at the console (not the mic!) although I did do a bit of that this summer. couldn't bear to listen to my voice on the radio, though. oh well. I was wondering if anyone else was interested in the upcoming conference at the J-School on Sept. 21 to 23, I believe. They have something like 5 or 6 speakers, Naomi Klein and Dalton Camp are two of the names that come to mind right now. Anyhow, Jenn Leask and I are planning to make it down to Regina (yes, Jenn is now in Edmonton too!) and Renée Tratch might just be in the neighbourhood as well for that conference. is anyone else going? It would be fun to see you guys again .... those living in Saskatchewan, I'm talking about you! the others have a good excuse not to go. By the way, saw Lisa Unrau in Edmonton the other night. she was on a stage. In a PLAY! she's great! and she can sing, too. But we knew that already, right?
well, gotta go!
Posted on January 12, 2001 by Ginette BenoitIt seems another MIA has come crawling back to peruse this fascinating website, check up on everyone and, what the hell, say hello! Maybe it's the continuous chinook weather we've been having these past couple weeks up in chinook country. Temperatures hovering over zero although as a winter person I tend to grumble about there not being enough snow or enough ice to go skating to my liking. I mostly get weird looks when I say things like that, though. After four months on the job I now consider myself a trained radio technician (as opposed to the technically-challenged person I was when I sat down at the studio control board some weeks ago). And when I'm not in the studio - I'm pitching ideas and doing research etc. for the afternoon show - it's quite featury which means we can get a little creative and...with a little imagination...anything goes. (yes, even the united way fundraising campaign!) I do miss writing (even though I write under a pseudonym for Canada Life's monthly corporate publication). It was so nice to read what others wrote in. As a hockey fan I want to tell Ken that I think he's reached the apogee of his career - he might as well retire soon. (or maybe a round of golf with Gretzky before retiring?) Also, congratulations Heather Prystay on your big news! Here's wishing a Happy New Year and Merry groundhog day to everyone!
Posted on August 23, 2000 by Ginette BenoitBig News for me this week so I thought I would share it with you. I just found out that I got a job at CBC French radio in Edmonton! I will spend half the time doing research for the morning show and the other time doint the technical stuff on the board (they will give me a crash course on what all those buttons and switches are for) I'm really excited about the move although I never thought I would be the techie at a radio station!! in Edmonton! I seem to be moving west instead of east as I thought I would. Oh well, that's fine with me ... The experience I gained at l'Eau vive helped land the new job, but I'm not too sad to be leaving this paper ... it's definitely time to move on...to the land of oil and mountains! I start September 5th, so if anyone is in Edmonton, make sure to try and track me down AND ... if you know of anyone in that city looking for a roomate in the very near future, let me know as I don't have much time to find myself some shelter!
Posted on July 5, 2000 by Ginette BenoitYes, I am alive and well and still in Regina though I know you wouldn't really know it from my (ahem) absence from this site. Which, by the way, is wonderful. Way to go Chad!I actually just had a cup of espresso before going to bed and have insomnia so what better time to drop everyone a line? As mentioned, I am working at a french weekly newspaper in Regina (distributed to our faithful readers province-wide). Half the staff (of six people) is from Quebec so I'm definitely getting to brush up on my french, not to mention get in the habit of swearing like the best Quebecker truck driver there ever was! I've also arleady travelled a fair bit in the province, to Ponteix, Bellevue, Saskatoon and I'm off to Gravelbourg and Val Marie this weekend. Nothing like getting to know those small Saskatchewan towns! The workload isn't bad as it didn't take long to get used to the slower pace of a weekly paper where you actually get an hour for lunch most days. One thing though is that the paper is so community oriented with just a bit of hard news and the novelty of writing about nuns who are retiring and moving away from small towns is wearing off pretty fast. (Although I did meet the ambassador of France to Canada back in May) It's ok for now, but I'm hoping to move on to bigger and better things within the next 6 months (after all, the grass is always greener...) but I'm still not sure what my next destination will be. I'm also doing a couple more tv projects for the national french cable stations TV5 and TVA which I find interesting and a nice change of pace. Will be filming in Gravelbourg and Val Marie this weekend. Life at Chateau Tratch is as charming as ever. For some reason, the battered and torn old tent we camped in at Minnedosa's Shakin the Lake was called Chateau Benoit. It was somewhat less glamorous than the townhouse but cozy all the same. Sorry I wrote so long (insomnia hasn't dissipated) and hope everyone is doing well.
Posted on May 9, 2000 by Renee TratchAs of May 6, Ginette has become an official CHATEAU roomie. She is back safe and sound from frolicking with the Benoit clan and the loco locals of Costa Rica. Today is her first day at L'eau Vive and I am sure she kicked some major fransaskois butt. I told her about Chad's masterpiece and I am sure she'll check it out soon.Benoit and the other three are sure to have some house warmers and stuff all through out the summer.
Posted on May 3, 2000 by Dave FreemanGinette is going to be working for the French language paper she was freelancing for during the last semester. She will be living with the multi-lingual Renee Tratch and two other friends in a townhouse in Regina. |
