Who is Amanda Coetzer? Amanda Coetzer is the greatest tennis player from the Open era to hail from South Africa. She is the only South African to ever reach a ranking of number three in the world, achieved in her career best year of 1997. In her eleven year career, Coetzer has played in three Grand Slam semi finals; twice at the Australian and once at the French Open. She has been given the nickname 'The Little Assassin' by the media, partly because of her small stature but also because Amanda has an uncanny ability to upset players of higher ranking and status. She is only the sixth ever player in the history of the women's tour to defeat two number ones in a calendar year, a feat Coetzer achieved when she beat both Steffi Graf and Martina Hingis in 1997. Amanda is amongst a small handful of players to defeat Graf four or more times, with three of those wins also coming in 1997. Coetzer capped off a stellar year by being the only person to ever win three awards at the annual Women's Tennis Association Awards; for Most Improved Player voted by the media, the Karen Krantzche Award for Sportsmanship voted by the players, and the Diamond ACES Award which is presented to the player who gives of herself selflessly in order to enhance and promote player/fan interaction and promote women's tennis through off-court activities. Best known for her on court athleticism, her determination, and her love of the game, as well as for her approachability and modesty off court, Amanda Coetzer is an inspiration to anyone. || Home || || Latest || || New || || Biography || || Gallery || || Results || || Stats || || Articles || || Interviews || || Trade || || Forum || || Links || || Rings || || Awards || || Sign GuestBook || || View GuestBook || || Email Me || |
