Ethernet Card problems

I have an old Mac IIx with an ethernet card that has not been used in many
years. I am trying to configure the ethernet card to work, but have not had
any success. It has both a Thin-net BNC connector and what appears to be a
DB-15 transceiver connector. However that connector does not have the usual
slide locks. Anyway, I have connected a transceiver to it and tried to find
it with MacTCP. No luck. However the network control panel after 3-4
minutes of trying eventually shows EtherTalk Slot 4 (that where this card is
located). If I try to select that for the AppleTalk connection, I get a
"could not switch due to an error" message. In addition, none of the
transceiver lights are on.

Are there any jumpers/switches on the ethernet card that need to be set? I
have no docs for it. Should MacTCP see it or is there another
extension/control panel required first?

Formatting software?

Thursday, August 21, 1997

Dear Blair,

Hi, I have on order a Micropolis 9.1 gigabyte AV hard drive for my
Quadra 800. Now for my question. On a drive that big do you think it is
better to use Apple's formatting software or is it better to use
somethiing like Hard Disk Toolkit?

H2 make invisible files visible

IMHO one of the slickest utilities for doing this sort of file manipulation
is File Typer. The last version I saw was 5.2, but it may well be beyond
that by now - available at finer archives everywhere. It allows complete
(but SAFE) manipulation of file type/file creator information. And, as an
added feature will set or clear all the "mode" bits including visable.
Very nice user interface, and a make-this-file-like-that-one feature that
makes it pretty safe to use. Well worth the share ware fee.

Looking for presentation software

I am looking for recommendations for classroom presentation software. It
must have the following characteristics:

1. Be reasonably easy to use.
2. Run on a Macintosh.
3. Be capable of displaying fine art in millions of colors.
4. Be fast (faster than say Netscape, which I have used in classs to show
images).
5. Allow random access: that is not just display canned presentations, but
allow me to go back five images, ahead two, select arbitrarily any image I
want without having to click through the intervening ones.
6. Allow a mixture of still images, animations, video clips, sound files,
etc., with the first two being the most important. I can live without video
and sound.
7. Allow me to bring up a screen on which I can type words on the fly,
during the presentation.

Our home-grown HyperCard application called ProPS does all of this, but too
slowly and cumbersomely. What's out there--commercial or otherwise--that
can do the same?

Most reviews I have seen assume that a presentation will be stepped through
in a predetermined way. I really want to avoid that model.

It would be n

Mac LC II, which version of MacOS ? (R)

According to the Mac Database from Apple (Nov 96 or so) the LC is only
an 68020 processor, not an 68030 as you wrote. The highest version for
the LC is 7.5.5. However, this was before 7.6.x appeared, so it MIGHT
(or MIGHT NOT) work...

I once tried to install 7.5.x on a Mac IIsi (68030 processor), and it
was really painfully slow. With 7.1, the machine behaved much better,
and I think this applies to all "low-end" Macs.

YouŽll be limited to older versions of Netscape or Internet Explorer, I
think, since the recent versions require a 68030 processor. E-Mail would
run perfectly (even runs on a MacPortable 68000 with about 7 MHz speed!)
with an LC and an external modem.

Good luck, Christian.

Could someone do a "Get Info" on the OS 8 Finder, click on it's icon, copy

Sure it will.

With Snitch installed, get info on any random file or disk.

Now, from Snitch's own menu in that Get Info dialog, select "Get Info..."

You get a standard file open dialog; use it to go find your invisible file
and click the "Get Info" button.

Now you've got the standard Get Info dialog, with Snitch's enhancements,
for your invisible file. You can toggle the invisible bit from there.

It is because of the processor recycling.
Open control panel "Powerbook", and push option when you select custom mode.
Then, you can choose whether to use the processor recycling or not.

OS8 and NDD

I recently installed OS8 and Norton 3.5.1 (In get info it says 3.5.1) on my
7200/90. Now, every time I run Disk Doctor, either starting up from Norton
CDRom, or a floppy, or from the HD I get the msg "Bad modification date"
for the desktop. Whether I choose to fix, or not to fix, when I restart,
the desktop automatically rebuilds. I then use NDD-"bad modification
date"!!-desktop auto rebuilds on startup.
How do I stop this? I never had a problem with Norton 3.2 and OS7.5.5.

The Performa 6400 comes with either a Global Village or a Geoport modem.

To find out which you have, read Apple's tech notes at:

If you have a Geoport, all upgrades are via software.

Popup Folder!

The following was posted to the PopupFolder representative at ADSoft,
massumma@adsoft.com

I just got around to upgrading my operating system to MacOS 8 and found
that PopupFolder doesn't work. ACK!!!!!

I then did a "find" on AltaVista for every mention of PopupFolder and
MacOS 8 and it seems to be common knowledge that 8 breaks PopupFolder.

PLEASE PLEASE! Upgrade PopupFolder! It's the nicest thing aside from
QuicKeys, maybe the nicest thing ever! I might have to back to system 7
just to have PopupFolder! I promise you, you can make money with this
control panel, although you could use with better advertising than
you've had so far.

Please add me to any mailing list you intent to create regarding the
future of PopupFolder. I hate spam and really really seldom invite
anyone to add me to a mailing list (and please don't circulate my email
address to any third parties!) but PopupFolder is special.

PPP Client/Dialer question...

Hello,
I recently setup internet access on my parent's Mac (in Pakistan) but
unfortunately the ISP has a wierd way of providing access, namely multiple
(52 to be exact) single-lines phones numbers instead of multi-line single
phone number as done by most ISPs here in US. I used FreePPP v2.5 for
the setup, and dialing up requires that the user try each of the 52 numbers
sequentially to see which one is available. Needless to say, its not
only inconvenient, but also a great waste of time since manual selection
of numbers thru FreePPP can be time consuming. And on top of that, its
confusing for newbies. As for asking the ISP for help, their answer was:
"What's a Mac?" :^(

Is there a PPP client/dialer/whatever that can dial thru a given list of
numbers until it gets a connection? Either a commerical or shareware product is
fine. If one doesn't exist, is there an easily implementable work-around or
solution?

I would greatly any help/hint in this regards. Thanks in advance.

RasterOps Video board Driver Patch

Hi all,

We need a driver patch for an old RasterOps Video Board Model 108 Plus (Nubus)
living in a Mac IIfx. The driver patch is required for the board to work with
MacOS 7.5 and up. The RasterOps website refers to a "RO Driver Patch Disk
v1.01", it fails to indicate where and how to get it, however. The website
(www.rasterops.com) has an international support phone number, but that didn't
bring me any further than a long chain of (non-)answering machines. Does anybody
out there have the gadget disk or file or know an ftp-site from where it can be
downloaded. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, Tom, small icons are allowed according to the "view options"

there are not three sizes anymore--it's only very small & large--nothing

Win. cursors, icons --> Mac?

A long time ago I remember using an app. that translated Win. to Mac icons.
What was the name of this utility and where can I find it now? A search
revealed nothing. Also, is it possible to translate Win. cursors to a
format my Mac can understand? (maybe a picture file?)

Thank you all,
