Mother's Day is observed earlier here in England than it is in the USA. This year, it is on 2nd April, which is later than usual (due to the lateness of Easter, I would think!). This is only a short page, because I have no Mother to buy a present for - or to spoil, but I think it is a worthwhile day (certainly far more so than Father's Day!) and this page is dedicated to mothers everywhere and in memory of my own. I am writing it on her birthday, as this is kinda *my* Mother's Day.

Here is a poem which I have found on just about every Mother's Day
page I looked on

M-O-T-H-E-R

M is for the million things she gave me,
O means only that she's growing old,
T is for the tears she shed to save me,
H is for her heart of purest gold;
E is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
R means right, and right she'll always be,
Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER"
A word that means the world to me.

Well, if you don't mind me throwing up a little - that is rather squelchy to my mind! It's not that mothers aren't all of these things, but rather that they are MUCH MORE! (And what's this "growing old"?? Mothers NEVER grow old!!) Today's mother is expected to take care of her children, her husband, the house; to work - and to somehow find the time and energy to look after herself and look really sexee! But, heck, it doesn't work like that - and today's mothers will most probably not be welcoming home their brood with homemade cakes and lemonade - rather chocolate biccies and cola! There is not enough time to fulfil all the roles expected of mothers. But whatever else they strive to be - the most important thing to my mind, is that they be a FRIEND to their children.

ME AND MOTHER'S DAY

Well, who is that very young mother with her son?? :) I chose that picture, because there was something very "Princess Di" about it! (If the other child whines that there is no picture of him - could I just point out that I was pregnant with you at the time - so you are in the picture really!). Anyway, my kids used to make me cards at school and buy me choccies or little bunches of daffs, but now they buy me fun things and give me sparkly cards with kittens and bunnies on!! (My hub always buys me flowers on mother's day - I'm not sure whether that's because he also has no mother to give to - or whether he looks upon me as a mother-figure!!! :)) Anyway, kiddies all over the world - your mum doesn't want you spending a lot of money on her, ok?? Just give her a kiss and that will be enough! (This year I have been promised "my own" copy of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - so that speaks volumes on how much I've grown up!!)

This is the mother's "poem" which I prefer

A Mother's Letter to the World

Dear World:

My son starts school today. It's going to be strange and new to him for a while. And I wish you would sort of treat him gently. You see, up to now, he's been king of the roost. He's been boss of the backyard. I have always been around to repair his wounds, and to soothe his feelings.

But now-things are going to be different.

This morning, he's going to walk down the front steps, wave his hand and start on his great adventure that will probably include wars and tragedy and sorrow.

To live his life in the world he has to live in will require faith and love and courage.

So, World, I wish you would sort of take him by his young hand and teach him the things he will have to know. Teach him-but gently, if you can. Teach him that for every scoundrel there is a hero; that for every crooked politician there is a dedicated leader; that for every enemy there is a friend. Teach him the wonders of books.

Give him quiet time to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and flowers on the green hill. Teach him it is far more honorable to fail than to cheat.

Teach him to have faith in his own ideas, even if everyone else tells him they are wrong. Teach him to sell his brawn and brains to the highest bidder, but never to put a price on his heart and soul.

Teach him to close his ears to a howling mob...and to stand and fight if he thinks he's right.

Teach him gently, World, but don't coddle him, because only the test of fire makes fine steel.

This is a big order, World, but see what you can do. He's such a nice little fellow.

"Happy Birthday, Mum! And Happy Mother's Day in April! Hope you can get "extra strong mints" and knitting needles in Heaven! Fancy Des O'Connor still being alive - and not looking a day older! But I expect you're up there chin-wagging
with Elvis, huh?? Miss you. Many kisses across cyberspace and beyond."
