Keep Foreigner Away, Vote the BJP & National Democratic Alliance Way

dear bridge friends I don't mix bridge with politics but the issue of foreigner being thrusted on India is too important to be not spoken about.

  • Bridge Facilities in India
  • In this section I would be putting together all the information regarding bridge facilites in the various cities in India. The information may be sketchy at present but would be made comprehensive in future.

Lucknow Allahabad Varanasi Meerut Dehradun Ghaziabad Kanpur Moradabad Delhi Chandigarh Jaipur Mumbai Pune Asansol Durgapur Bangalore Chennai Ranchi

  • Tournament News
  • In this section I would cover tournaments happening in India and more so the tournaments happening in Northern part of India and in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

HINDALCO bridge tournament is took place at HINDALCO,Renukoot from July 30-Aug 1, 1999. A record 82 teams took part from 5 states & 19 different cities. The show ,however, wasn't as impressive as it used to be in the previous years. The good thing is that the the organisers have promised to put up a better show next year.

K.N. Modi bridge tournament is taking place at Boat House Club, Nainital from Oct 2-Oct 5, 1999.

Rajendra Golcha Memorial bridge tournament is taking place at Jai Club, Jaipur from Oct 9-Oct 11,1999.

This week's deal is from Life Master Pairs of the 71st Summer NABC which was held at San Antonio, Texas.

In the previous few issues I've reported deals from 71st NABC. All these deals were reported in ACBL bulletin. These bulletins are very informative and make excellent readings. One wonders why in India there is no systematic effort to ensure that bulletins are published in every nationals. The effect of lack of bulletins is that the deals which are good and don't get reported are made to be played in various other events. For example in this years National pair at Home Deal 33 was Deal 1 in the pairs finals of the Holkar Trophy of the nationals played at Delhi. I reported this deal in one of my previous issues.

This week's deal shows need to be careful while playing your cards.

NS are playing in 4 Hearts, a conract difficult to reach.

Four Hearts makes good play but South has to be very careful on Club Jack lead.

If South tries to ruff a Club immediately and then try to cash Heart Ace, the contract would go down. As West would either get in with Diamond or Spade over ruff and then would be able to promote partner's Heart King from a Club ruff and would also score another Trump trick to take contract down.

To make this contract South needs to play a Diamond at Trick two!

South would now win any return by West, would ruff a Club in dummy and would come back via a Diamond ruff. Now the trump can be removed easily and the contract scores.

By the way, did you notice in previous week's deal (issue 47) that 5 Spade by NS is just one down. NS took a chance against a good card player that he may go down in a borderline contract.

Zia's $50,000 ORBIS deal competition opens up on September 1.
