  • Tournament News
  • In this section I would cover tournaments happening in India and more so the tournaments happening in Northern part of India and in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

UP State selection trials took place at Kanpur. Following pairs have qualified for summer nationals at Sanawar:Kr Vijayanand Singh & Pradeep Singh (Varanasi), CL Arora & Manoj Garg (Dehradun), NP Srivastava & NN Rastogi (Lucknow). MM Nangia & G Rodericks (Lucknow) are reserve one.Maheshwari (Allahabad) won the duplicate event and would be represnting UP at summer nationals. Indresh Agarwal, Sushil Agarwal, Govind Agarwal, A K sinha & B N Rastogi were playing for Maheshwari team.

The UP team did well at summer nationals by reaching semi finals where they lost to Railways ,the eventual winners, despite leading till 3 sessions of the four.

WBF World Wide Simultaneous Pairs event (formerly known as EPSON) would take place on June 2 & June 3 , 2000. The scoring of this event would be done on internet.

WBF is organising Mind Sports Organization's Worldwide Simultaneous Pairs on August 22 and August 23, 2000. It would be on the lines of Fifth Friday Championship organised by Herman De Wael. The magnitude of the championship would be higher with about 10000 tables results being compiled together.

  • Deal of the Week
  • In this section I would cover one good deal which appeared in the Weekly Bridge Tournaments at Lucknow or in a recent tournament with explanations.

This week's deal is from Politiken World Pairs which took place at Copenhagen, Denmark from April 21-23, 2000.

Politiken World Pairs is a premier pairs championship.Bettina Kolkerup and C Koch Palmund were NS in this deal which is featured because normally you would expect that those playing in Politiken pairs would do better than what Bettina did on this deal.

On double dummy basis it is very easy to score the contract of 4 S on any lead.

If trumps are lead and an attempt is made to remove dummy's trumps you can establish dummy's long C suit to score the contract by an overtrick. A H lead makes things easier for you to ruff 3 Hs in dummy to score the contract. On C or D play is similar. You can ruff 3 H by using a C ruff as the third entry. On c lead you just score the contract but on D lead you score the contract by an overtrick.

Bettina Kalkerup went shy on D lead.

She won first trick with Ace covering West's Jack. And ruffed two Hs, second with C King entry. After cashing C Ace she discrded third H on West's C Q.East ruffed and continued with a D. She did not finesse and won the trick with King. Now on a C which was ruffed by West she threw her losing D. Even now she would have scored the contract had trumps been breaking. But now she had to concede two more trump tricks and went down for a loss of 11 IMPs.

Do you think she could have done better ?
