I have subscribed to the SCUBA-L mailing list for a little over 4 years now, and it has never been boring! As with so many other mailing lists, there are regulars and there are lurkers, with the regulars outnumbering the lurkers 10:1 (my non-scientific guess, but this is my page, so I can write what I want).
We discuss, we have fights, we make up, we agree and disagree, but we are friends first and foremost, as much as people can be when they have, with a few exceptions, never met face-to-face.
We call ourselves NEDs, that is, we belong to the Network of Egghead Divers. We come from all over the world, but many of us also dive all over the world. For Soyong and me, one of the places not yet "on the map" for us was the Caribbean, but this was about to change!
The annual NEDfest, the one occasion in the year when NEDs get together, was held in Cozumel, Mexico, in June of 1999. Bob "Reef Fish" Ling did a great job of making as many preliminary arrangements as logistically possible, as well as of keeping people reminded of their bookings, chasing down good shops, and letting all of us benefit from his incredible knowledge of the area. Bob has logged close to 1,000 dives in Cozumel alone!
Soyong and I stayed in Cozumel for a week, and it was one of the best vacations we have ever had. The town itself is nothing to write home about, but meeting the people behind the postings was a fantastic experience. To a man (and woman), they proved to be fabulous company, well worth the grueling journey from Thailand to Cozumel.
I have selected a sample of the 600 pictures (surface and underwater) that I took in Cozumel, with captions and attempts at humor inserted here and there. However, I am running out of space on this website, so you will have to click here to see the "Cozumel Collection".
When you are done, there is a menu-link on that site, or you can use your browser's Back-button to get back here.
